Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is under fire and being called a hypocrite after she attended the Lollapalooza music festival where attendees went maskless and merely waved proof of vaccination to enter ahead of her imposing COVID restrictions on the city.
Roughly 100,000 attendees were expected each day of the gathering. It’s one of the largest festivals in the country but Lightfoot didn’t seem bothered in the least by it as she prepares to lock the city down once again due to the pandemic.
“At the same time she’s threatening possible restrictions if cases rise above 200 per day, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is moving forward with plans to bring 100,000 a day to Grant Park for Lollapalooza,” Chicago Tribune reporter Gregory Pratt noted.
The mayor made an appearance herself at Lollapalooza announcing to the massive crowd, “Thank you for masking up and vaxing up.” Lightfoot hypocritically defended holding the event, “It’s outdoors. We’ve been having large-scale events all over the city since June without major problems or issues. The Lolla team has been phenomenal. They’ve hired their own public health experts who’ve been working hand in glove with us since we started these discussions.”

This is how Lori Lightfoot’s lollapalooza is checking Vaccination cards & our mayor is lying saying 90% are vaccinated. Expect her to shut the city down soon because COVID rates have increased after she allowed 400,000 people to party so she can make the revenue. #Ridiculousness pic.twitter.com/Wcq0xzWYqZ

The festival was canceled last year due to the pandemic. According to Fox News, it reportedly cost the city approximately $35 million in sales and almost $9 million in lost revenue.
Attendees were required to show proof of vaccination or show a negative COVID-19 test result. Those who are not vaccinated were required to wear masks but few did. Social distancing was not being implemented with the massive, tightly-packed crowds. Approximately 52 percent of all Chicagoans are fully vaccinated, according to city-data.
A prominent Chicago infectious diseases expert is ringing alarm bells that “lots of people” will contract COVID at the festival, but Lightfoot dismissed criticisms as coming from “critics on the sidelines,” and stated that her health team claims the festival is safe.
Dr. Emily Landon, executive medical director for infection prevention and control at the University of Chicago Medical Center, claims that the festival is a “spreader” event. She fears individuals who become infected with the virus, vaccinated or not, could start “wildfires of infection” across the country.
“I think a lot of people are going to get COVID at Lollapalooza,” she told NBC 5 Chicago. “The real problem is not so much that a bunch of young people who come into Chicago getting COVID at this event. The real problem is them taking it back to places that have very low vaccination rates.”
Many are claiming the festival is a super-spreader event due to the proliferation of the Delta Variant.
“Will @chicagosmayor Lightfoot be blamed for approving a #COVID19 super-spreader event this weekend — @lollapalooza, three days of music euphoria with a huge, mask-less crowd?” journalist Laurie Garrett asked via Twitter.

Retired Department of Defense operative Tony Shaffer also quipped on Twitter, “Wow – COVID is the most intelligent virus ever in history – it will wait for @LoriLightfoot to get the City of Chicago all sorts of tax revenue before it becomes super dangerous and transmissible!”
Sports reporter Julio Rausseo nailed Lightfoot for her hypocrisy, “According to @klefurgy, it’s not a big deal since @chicagosmayor is backstage @lollapalooza. What’s odd is, the mayor is masked outdoors with the general public but not with the boujie celebrities.”

Even more ridiculous was the fact that Lightfoot admonished those attending Lollapalooza to mask up while riding public transportation before taking them off at the festival.
Yet Lollapalooza? Makes Sturgis look like a pretty responsible gathering.

I really can’t wait until the next mayoral campaign, when all Lightfoot’s opponent(s) will have to do is keep pointing at Lolla pictures and making this face 🤨

This is Lollapalooza 2021. Lori Lightfoot decided to postpone COVID restrictions because Lollapalooza was financially beneficial to Chicago.
Restrictions now aren’t about science or preventing COVID. It’s about control. pic.twitter.com/6wSWxxZet3
