House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is digging in her heels and stating that the House won’t vote on the bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure plan until the Senate goes through reconciliation and passes a second massive $3.5 trillion spending package.
“We are rooting for the infrastructure bill to pass, but we all know that more needs to be done,” she stated Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos. She plans on blocking the infrastructure package until the Democrats get everything they are aiming for.
“I hope that it will pass. I won’t put it on the floor unless we have the rest of the initiative,” Pelosi proclaimed.
Republican Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) bluntly noted that Pelosi’s intentions directly contradict President Biden’s efforts to pass the bipartisan infrastructure plan. “What she has just said is entirely counter to what President Biden has committed to, and what the Senate is doing, which is a two-track process,” he remarked. “The infrastructure bill has nothing to do with the reckless tax-and-spend extravaganza she’s talking about.”

When asked if that could mean Congress ends up with nothing, Portman, who is one of the leading negotiators on the bill, said, “If she has her way, we could.”
Political analyst Miranda Devine at The New York Post was blunt when it comes to the divisiveness of the Speaker of the House, “Nancy Pelosi used to point her angry finger at Donald Trump, but she leaves him for dust when it comes to busting norms, dividing Congress and causing mayhem. If anyone is to blame for the hyper-partisanship in Washington these days, it’s the spiteful House speaker.”
“She behaves more like a Mafia don waging a gang war than a dignified, fair, and honest presiding officer, which is what the speaker’s role requires,” Devine remarked. “Pelosi abuses her power in ways that once were unthinkable. Her speakership has been the antithesis of Lincoln’s entreaty to ‘the better angels of our nature.’ Everyone in Congress — and by extension the nation — has been sullied by the spite and vitriol she has injected into the political sphere. There is no grace or Christian charity, just the barren wasteland of the zero-sum game, power for power’s sake.”
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) went so far as to urge Republicans to leave the Capitol to stop the passage of the bill after calling it a travesty.
“If for some reason, they pass the budget resolution to bring that bill to the floor of the United States Senate … You gotta have a quorum to pass a bill in the Senate. I would leave before I’d let that happen. So, to my Republican colleagues, we may learn something from our Democratic friends in Texas when it comes to avoiding a $3.5 trillion tax-and-spend package. Leave town,” Graham urged.
“You talk to Lindsey Graham about what he says,” Pelosi sneered in response to Graham’s statement. “I’m telling you what’s going to happen in the House of Representatives.”
The $1 trillion infrastructure package contains $579 billion in new spending that would directly affect items such as increased broadband connections across the country and updating bridges and roads.
But even that version of the package has been objected to by Republican senators because it contains $40 billion in IRS funding.
The two packages total an eye-popping $4.1 trillion in new spending which would require a debt ceiling increase. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) contends that the $3.5 trillion spending package would cover liberal social program expansions such as Medicare coverage for dental and vision care.
“The full faith and credit of the United States is never to be placed in doubt, it is in the Constitution, and it will be respected,” Pelosi intoned. “Let there be no question, we will address the debt limit.”
A vote on the $1 trillion infrastructure plan could come as early as Monday, according to Senators Portman and Mitt Romney (R-UT).
