Daily Beast hails Liz Cheney as superhero for ‘saving Pelosi, GOP, and maybe America from themselves’

A self-descried conservative columnist for The Daily Beast, a fairly left-wing magazine, made the case last Friday that Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is somehow saving the Republican Party by siding with the Democrat Party.

Columnist Matt Lewis is so convinced of Cheney’s purportedly noble intentions that he even called her “Queen Liz Cheney” and wrote that she’s the “Iron Lady of the Republican Party.”

He even gave her a cape.

No joke.

As evidence of her alleged nobleness, he cited her recent decision to stab the GOP in the back by siding with Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and against Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

At issue is the Democrats’ Jan. 6th commission. McCarthy offered up five Republicans as potential committee participants last week, but Pelosi automatically rejected two of them. In response, he withdrew all five picks and vowed that the GOP wouldn’t participate in the commission, thus making it a partisan endeavor.

But instead of standing with the party, Cheney rushed to take Pelosi’s side and has also accepted a seat on the commission courtesy of an invitation from the Democrat leader, thus technically making the commission bipartisan again.

Lewis admitted this in his column.

“Cheney, by her very existence as a Republican, makes this select committee bipartisan,” he wrote.

This, according to him, is somehow good.

“In the case of an investigation, there are two reasons for bipartisanship. The first is legitimacy. Ideally, you want everyone to feel represented so that there is buy-in. The second reason is that, as the cliché goes, diversity makes us stronger. This is the same reason why any leader should listen to a variety of viewpoints before making a decision,” he wrote.

The problem is that — unlike McCarthy’s picks, Reps. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks —  Cheney has no interest in offering everybody equal representation.

For instance, Jordan explained to The Independent earlier in the week how he intended to bring up the Democrat Party-supported Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 “to point out that Democrats created this environment sort of normalising rioting, normalising looting, normalising anarchy in the summer of 2020.”

But Cheney has no intention of bringing up the riots. Her focus is solely on former President Donald Trump, whom she singularly blames for the Jan. 6th.

Lewis endorses this myopic vision. Worse, he shares her factually inaccurate belief that the Jan. 6th riot “was the worst attack on this Capitol since 1814.”

“The truth is that Cheney is doing exactly what you would want a congressperson whose judgment is that the attack on Jan. 6 ‘was the worst attack on this Capitol since 1814’ and ‘an attack on our Constitution’ to do,” he wrote.

“She believes there ‘must be an investigation that is nonpartisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts wherever they may lead.’ This strikes me as an entirely reasonable stand to take,” Lewis continued.

“And though today’s Republicans would deny it, future Republicans may reflect on this moment and find that there was at least one courageous member of their party worth (retroactively) celebrating.”

Perhaps, but likely not, as even Cheney’s future looks bleak. She’s already hemorrhaged her position as chair of the House Republican Conference and set herself up for losing her seat in Congress in 2022.

And then there’s this, via Newsweek: “Cheney is nearly three times more popular among Democratic voters than Republican voters, according to a recent poll. While only 15 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters view Cheney favorably, 42 percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters view her favorably.”

The only way she’ll ever be considered “courageous” by her party is if she joins the Democrat Party.

For the time being, critics of Lewis’s piece are wondering if he’ll ever join that one thing they call … reality.
