Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady appeared to swing political while making a joke about the election results with President Biden during a White House visit for the team on Tuesday.
The team was at the White House to celebrate their 2020 Super Bowl championship against the Kansas City Chiefs. Everyone was all smiles as Brady took the podium on the South Lawn to thank Biden for his hospitality.
“These guys are an amazing group of men,” Brady said. “It didn’t look great there at one point. We were 7-5, struggling a little bit, as the president alluded to. But we found a rhythm, we got on a roll,” Brady remarked. “Not a lot of people, you know, think we could’ve won, and in fact, I think about 40% of the people still don’t think we won,” he cracked. “You understand that, Mr. President?”
In character, Biden took a moment to reply while the crowd laughed at Brady’s joke. Finally, the president replied, “I understand that!” Brady cracked. “You understand that, Mr. President?” Biden then interjected: “I understand that.”

Brady continued by quipping that people started to call him “Sleepy Tom” after he forgot which down it was during a game in Chicago. The joke was in reference to Trump’s “Sleepy Joe” nickname for Biden during the 2020 campaign. At 43, Brady is the NFL’s oldest playing quarterback.
“Personally, it’s nice for me to be back here,” Brady noted. “We had a game in Chicago where I forgot what down it was. I lost track of one down in 21 years of playing, and they started calling me ‘Sleepy Tom.’ Why would they do that to me?”

The exchange was awkward and a bit confusing as Brady and former President Trump are reportedly golfing buddies and friends.
Brady has won seven Super Bowls during his storied NFL career. But this was the first visit to the White House since 2005. He skipped both the Obama and Trump presidencies. Brady was a last-minute dropout when the Patriots visited the Trump White House in 2017. At the time, he cited family matters. He won again in 2019, but the team declined to visit the White House.
Earlier in the ceremony, Biden recognized both Bruce Arians and Brady for being the oldest coach and quarterback to ever win the Super Bowl.
“You know a lot is made about the fact that we have the oldest coach ever to win a Super Bowl and the oldest quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Well, I’ll tell you right now, you won’t hear any jokes about that from me,” Biden commented. “As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing wrong with being the oldest guy to make it to the mountaintop. That’s how I look at it.” Biden is the oldest man at 78 to ever become president.
He then told Brady that he looks like he has “about 20 more years left.”
“You’re just about the best to ever play,” Biden remarked.
Football fans had fun with Brady and Biden over the visit. Some thought Brady was taking a swipe at Trump, but others thought it was masterful trolling on the quarterback’s part:
