For much of the press corps, it’s imperative to stick to the liberal narrative at all costs, but MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell excels at this better than most.
In an interview with District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, Mitchell managed to put a sunny spin on the growing number of homicides in the city while reacting to a shooting over the weekend at the Washington Nationals baseball game that left four wounded.
Shots rang out in the sixth inning outside the Nationals Park stadium, as thousands of fans watched the home team play the San Diego Padres. Panicked fans were seen scrambling for their lives, thinking the shooting was inside the facility. That incident followed a drive-by shooting in Washington on Friday night that killed a 6-year-old girl and wounded five adults.
Asked if her city was safe, Bowser rambled on about coordinating an effort between police and Homeland Security to look into the incident, before blaming it on guns.
“Unfortunately when people use guns, innocent people can get hurt,” the Democratic mayor said, before claiming they’ll track down the suspects and bring them to justice — which rarely happens.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the number of assaults in DC involving a gun is up year over year since 2018, with the total in 2021 higher than at the same point last year.
More from the WSJ:
Through this weekend in the District of Columbia, 455 assaults involving guns had been reported, compared with 422 through mid-July 2020, police data show. The category of assaults includes any use of a gun in the incident and isn’t limited to shootings. Specific data on shootings wasn’t readily available Sunday.
The higher rates of gun crimes mirror trends in other cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, where shootings are up compared with this point last year and homicides are rising or are near high levels seen last July.
The Washington Post just reported that homicides in D.C. were up three percent from the same time in 2020 and are rising in the city for the fourth straight year.
As the WSJ noted, the trend is being seen in city after city across America, almost exclusively in Democrat-run cities. At the same time, Democratic politicians have been pushing the “defund the police” movement and aggressively prosecuting police officers who are involved in the use of force. The end result is a record number of cops retiring in precinct after precinct across the country.
Yet, Bowser talks about protocols and “best practices,” and being aggressive in finding those who are committing these crimes.
“We have a beautiful city, we have parks and recreation centers and so many amenities for people to enjoy, and we are very focused on our public safety and we’re not going to let any incident … stop us from living in our city,” she said. “But we do have to be very focused on finding the people, and there are few of them, and focus on the places. Also a few of them that are contributing to a lack of a sense of safety in our town, and we’re very committed to getting to the bottom of it.”
Offering no follow-up to any of the mayor’s talking points, or pressing Bowyer on the rising violence, Mitchell acts as a self-appointed ambassador for Washington, DC, as she thanks the mayor and Police Commissioner Robert Contee for how “safe” the city is.
“We are thankful to you and to Commissioner Contee and what the police are doing, and we know how safe and wonderful our city is,” she said. “This is just a shocking way that it was displayed for the whole country to see in a place that has been improving in safety. But we do have over 100 homicides here already this year and it is really of concern.”
