An “extremely privileged” unemployed man decided to drop acid and then engage in a massive tweetstorm that shredded his parents for giving him $100,000 on his birthday, paying his college tuition, and supporting him financially.
Qiaochu Yuan spewed his ingratitude in a 35-tweet thread on Thursday, criticizing his parents for financially supporting him. He has not held a job in three years. He started off by noting that he had taken “a medium dose of acid” a few days previously which he claims caused him to admit “some things to myself” concerning his financial situation.
He began, tweeting that “a few days ago i took a medium dose of acid and wrote for several hours straight and admitted some things to myself, mostly about money. let’s start here: last august my mom gave me $100,000 for my birthday. i resented her for this and also suppressed the resentment.”
“I wrote for maybe 12 hours straight and it eventually turned into a sort of spontaneous dialogue between the person I am on acid and the person I am sober; acidQC and soberQC,” Yuan stated.

Yuan, who now lives in an Airbnb, said that acidQC “told him” that “you’ve been feeling social pressure to pretend like you have a ‘financial health’ that is entirely about your savings and your income and it’s just not true at all. the truth is that if you ran out of money your parents would send you more because they love you.”
“You feel like you were told by society that the way making living works is that you do labor and are paid a fair wage for your labor, and that’s how you earn the right to exist and be a member of society,” he remarked.
“You feel guilty because you’ve never done this,” Yuan continued. “But that’s not true. You actually do not need to earn the right to exist and you never have.”
“The reason you’re alive right now and not starving to death on the street even though you haven’t had a job in three years is because your parents send you money because they love you,” Yuan told himself.
Then he compared himself to Harry Potter. He also tweeted that besides the $100,000 gift he got on his birthday in August, his parents paid his $175,000 MIT tuition, and his living expenses in college and grad school.
**WARNING: Language**
and i was like oh my god i'm literally harry fucking potter. i'm literally being protected by my parents' love in the form of money and i always have been. how incredibly embarrassing

my parents paid something like $175,000 of tuition to MIT out of pocket because they wanted me to have a good education and a good life. they were paying for all of my living expenses in both college and grad school. i never talked about this with anyone, really

“the truth is that for you money is a game you play with your parents. the most important thing you do to get money is to not piss off your parents so much that they cut you off,” Yuan said. “and then i was like oh my god am i a spoiled rich kid??? am i a trust fund baby kind of??? that’s even worse jesus.”
He proceeded to go even further off the deep end, writing “i recognize that i’m speaking from a position of extreme privilege here but this wasn’t all upside. my parents took care of me materially at the expense of taking care of me emotionally. it took me until this trip to even kinda experience the money they spent as an act of care.”
acidQC said – the rest of these have been paraphrases but this one is a direct quote:
"your parents created a world for you where the most real thing was how they felt about you. they successfully used money to make everything else less real by protecting you from it" pic.twitter.com/RZhEiY2oo0

“the other stakes are about dignity. acidQC said ‘you need dignity much more than you need money’ and that sort of blew me away a little. like… sh*t,” he confusedly concluded.

Yuan tried to explain why he wrote the thread in a follow-up tweet he posted on Friday. “In case people are still confused, last night I got something like a dozen DMs from people, maybe half of them strangers, being like ‘thank you for writing the money thread,’ several ‘I’m in this position too and it’s so hard to talk about,’” he noted. “That’s who I write these threads for.”
The lengthy Twitter thread was slammed by commenters on Twitter:
Repeat after me: “I will not do acid and then post my ‘realizations’ on Twitter.” https://t.co/EwywmCbEUr

Uh I have wealthy parents and the shame of acting like this would just kill me outright. Their whole goal was to set me and my siblings up to be independent but they never paid for BS/MS at MIT…

What I really don’t see is much gratitude for all of the many opportunities you have been given and seem to be squandering away. I think your parents obviously love you enough for you to see a therapist to work through why you don’t want to support yourself. Couldn’t hurt

Jesus Kid , you need to grow up .
— Hans Jedermann (@JedermannHans) July 17, 2021
“You need dignity more than you need money” oh my *god*, shut up. Just… stop. You’re a twee trust fund kid who’s never had an actual life or death situation in your entire existence. Try picking between rent or food for a few months and see how much your dignity matters then
