Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has heard information that the U.S. Capitol Police officer who shot and killed unarmed Jan. 6 protester Ashli Babbitt was the “head of security” for a top Democrat.
Capitol Sergeant at Arms Timothy Blodgett dropped the name of the officer widely suspected of shooting Babbitt during a hearing, as was recently reported. Lt. Michael Byrd was at the door in the U.S. Capitol when the 14-year Air Force veteran was shot, Blodgett confirmed. The officer has reportedly been in hiding and under protection since that fateful day.
Trump appeared Sunday on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” and was asked about January 6.
Saying there were a million people in Washington that day, Trump added, “They were there for one reason, the rigged election. They felt the election was rigged, that’s why they were there and they were peaceful people.”
The former president also said he suggested having 10,000 National Guard troops standing by and that the offer was ultimately turned down by those responsible for Capitol security.
After noting the disparity in how violent Antifa protesters are treated by the criminal justice system compared to the Jan. 6 protesters, many of whom are still being held in jail before trial, Trump then turned his attention to Babbitt’s death.
“By the way, while you’re at it, who shot Ashli Babbitt?” Trump asked. “Why are they keeping that secret? Who is the person [who] shot an innocent wonderful, incredible woman, a military woman, right in the head and there’s no repercussion. If that were the other side it would be the biggest story in this country. Who shot Ashli Babbitt? People want to know and why.”
Fox News host Maria Bartiromo said there has been speculation that the man who shot Babbitt was on the security detail of a leading Democratic member of Congress, and asked Trump what he knew of this.
“I have heard that,” the former president replied. “I will tell you they know who shot Ashli Babbitt, they’re protecting that person, I’ve heard also it was the head of security for a certain high official, a Democrat. We’ll see, it is going to come out, it is going to come out, what happened to Ashli Babbitt and what’s happening currently to people that are incarcerated.”
He remarked on the death and destruction seen last summer during the Black Lives Matter riots in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, and other cities, stressing that, in many cases, the people arrested were released and charges were dropped.
Trump also referenced video footage that showed, in some cases, police allowed the Jan. 6 protesters to enter the Capitol and how some of that footage showed a “love-fest” between the protesters and police.
While there were such scenes, there is also footage of protesters violently attacking police — the prevailing question being where these different groups of people? One group peacefully mingling with police, the other attacking them.
Bartiromo said the show had reached out to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to ask what he may know about who shot Babbitt and haven’t heard back from his office.
She asked Trump what he may know about any information Schumer may have, but Trump kept his focus on the double standard at play in America, a two-tiered system of justice, stressing that it’s “not right” that so many people arrested for their role on Jan. 6 are not being released from jail before trial. There have been over 500 people arrested, many charged with little more than trespassing, yet 6 months later, a large number languish in jail as the media pushed a contrived insurrection narrative.
As for any notion that the officer may have been on Schumer’s detail, the liberal media wasted little time running interference for such an idea, as seen from Forbes political reporter Andrew Solender:

Vox reporter Aaron Rupar took umbrage at Trump and Bartiromo calling Babbitt an “innocent, wonderful, incredible woman,” recklessly claiming she “was part of a mob that was trying to lynch” then-Vice President Mike Pence.
For the record, Trump all but confirmed in the interview that he is planning to run again in 2024.
“I absolutely know my answer, and we are going to do very well and people are going to be very happy,” Trump told Bartiromo.
