A 19-year-old Florida man has reportedly confessed to stalking two random women to their home Monday night and then murdering them after breaking inside.
Sage Curry, whose mugshot shows his face apparently splotched with blood, was arrested shortly thereafter and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and burglary.
“According to the affidavit released Tuesday, Curry said he entered their home through a bedroom window and killed the first victim with a knife while she was sleeping, stabbing her multiple times in the chest,” Tampa station WFLA reported.
“Police said the other woman in the house heard the attack and came to defend the woman getting stabbed, when Curry then turned the knife on her, stabbing her multiple times in the face and neck. During the attack, police said that Curry was injured by the second woman who came to defend the sleeping victim,” the station’s report continued.
After leaving the home, Curry then reportedly requested help from a neighbor for his injuries.
Speaking with police, the 19-year-old thug admitted to having grabbed the sharpest kitchen knife he could find in the victims’ kitchen and used it to kill them.
“Curry also told police he rolled one of the victim’s bodies off the couch in an effort to make the incident look like an accident,” according to WFLA.
No motive has been discerned, though given his lack of any criminal history and his known demeanor, the suspicion reportedly is that he’s mentally troubled.
“Just shock overall, I’d never think someone like this could do something like that. So just shocked right now,” Jordan Martin, a local who previously worked with Curry at a car wash, said to WFLA.
He added that Curry was always nice, quiet and kept to himself.
“It’s breathtaking and I had to do a doubletake and say is that the same kid I knew,” local county minister and Community Advocate Josh Estremera said to the station.
He reportedly added that Curry was dealing with family issues and had begun isolating himself around the time that the pandemic erupted last spring.
As of Thursday, still nothing was known about the victims because of a decision by their “next-of-kin” to invoke Marsy’s Law, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
It’s a “voter-approved amendment to the state constitution that allows crime victims or their families to withhold their identities from public police accounts.”
As for Curry, he was reportedly assigned a public defender during a court appearance Tuesday after he informed the judge, “I don’t have any money.”
According to the Michael B. Cohen Law Firm of South Florida, “In Florida, a conviction for a first-degree murder charge is punishable by a sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole.”
As for burglary, the state’s statutes explicitly state that first-degree burglary is “punishable by imprisonment for a term of years not exceeding life imprisonment.”
Florida, a state that’s been under Republican control since the 1990s, is not friendly to criminals, regardless of their age.
Take the case of William Hudgins, who at the age of 19 was sentenced to life in prison in 1995 for armed robbery.
“In 1995 — at age 19 — my son was convicted of simple robbery. He received a 16-month sentence,” William’s mother, Audrey Jennings Hudgins, wrote in an op-ed for the Tallahassee Democrat last year.
But because of Florida’s Prisoner Release Reoffender Mandatory Minimum Guideline, when Hudgins committed another armed robbery after his release, he was hit with a life sentence.
If Curry is convicted on the far more serious crime of murder, which seems like a strong possibility given his confession, it’s likely he’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars.
It’s the same fate originally shared by Lionel Tate, a black man who was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 13 in 2001 for the 1993 murder of a 6-year-old child.
Except that his sentence was overturned by a state appeals court in 2004. Yet Tate wound up back in prison years later for violating his probation, committing an armed robbery and threatening a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver with a knife.
“Lionel Tate, who was sentenced to life in prison five years ago for stomping a playmate to death when he was 12, was told by a judge that he was out of chances and sentenced on Thursday to 30 years in prison for violating his probation. He could again face life in prison for robbing a pizza deliveryman at gunpoint,” The New York Times reported in the spring of 2006.
