CNN is being relentlessly mocked for publishing a column claiming that President Joe Biden is poised to “be the most transformative president in 75 years.”
In fairness to CNN, the column isn’t necessarily representative of how everybody at the left-wing network feels as a whole. But on the other hand, the network’s pro-Biden coverage suggests it probably is a pretty accurate measure of everybody’s views.
Regardless, the piece was written by Jeffrey Sachs, a left-wing academic known for his frequent appearances on MSNBC and his pro-China positions on trade and health.
The title of the piece alone, “Joe Biden could be the most transformative president in 75 years,” was enough to draw mockery:
How delusional do you have to be to believe this?https://t.co/ps8w5D65QD

Yeah, he gonna transform into Kamala Harris…
— Armour Opossum (@ArmourOpossum) March 5, 2021
I’m actually embarrassed for the person who had to write this.

I’mmmmmmm, the cult of personality.

Off the charts delusional.

Surprised this dumb take wasn’t Cillizza.

It’s CNN. I’m not surprised.

This seems like a really bad case of rectal/cranial inversion.

They’re not wrong. He’s transforming from a human to a vegetable right in front of our eyes
— Tug Gingrich (@TugGGSN) March 5, 2021
In the piece, Sachs argued that Biden has the opportunity to enact a far-left agenda so transformative that he’d “become the most transformative president since Franklin D. Roosevelt,” who in the early 1900s launched the New Deal.
Think stuff like massive infrastructure spending, massive increase in entitlements, massive investments in renewable energy and maybe even some reparations to boot.
In this regard, some critics were willing to admit that Biden could indeed wind up being “transformative” — albeit definitely not a good way:
I could believe this. He’s handing over our country to the radical left. That’s pretty transformative.
— Left Abandoned (@AbandonedLeft) March 5, 2021
I wouldn’t say I would disagree. Transformative doesn’t necessarily mean for the good.
— Dave McDougle (@DMMc_) March 5, 2021
Yes he will be. But not transformed in a good way. It will be a transformational disaster.
— KAREN D (@Kazport) March 5, 2021
Opening our borders and crushing our fossil fuel industry will do that. But nothing good will come of it.

They aren’t wrong as many point out that Biden’s endorsed critical race theory, defecated on American history, promised reparations and stuck it to Asians — and he’s just getting started.
In his piece for CNN, Sachs also maintained that this agenda can be funded by spiking everybody’s taxes and implementing a controversial wealth tax.
“We should expand the role of the federal government and find the extra tax revenues to support that increase. … Such an increase in taxes should not be very hard to achieve in view of the massive profits of corporations and the megawealth of America’s richest individuals,” the left-wing academic claimed.
He added, “Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are rightly calling for a tax on ultra-wealth, starting at $50 million and above. It would raise an estimated $3 trillion over the next 10 years.”
It could also destroy economic growth and likely provoke capital flight as it did in Sweden.
“Sweden’s wealth tax, for example, was frequently blamed for capital flight and a depressed rate of national entrepreneurship. Relative to other European nations, Swedes were less likely to own their own business, and those who did often took their money elsewhere rather than reinvest it at home. The founder of Ikea, for example, moved much of his wealth into offshore foundations that shielded the money from the tax,” according to Reason magazine.
As a result, Sweden eventually eliminated the tax in 2007. It’s in fact been tried and eventually eliminated in multiple countries, including Australia, Denmark, Germany, Finland and Luxembourg.
But of course leftists like Sachs want to try it here and seem confident that Biden could pull it off. There’s just one problem, though:
Gonna need a bigger House majority than 5 seats and a 50-50 Senate for that
— Kevin Boyd (@TheKevinBoyd) March 6, 2021
The truth is that unless Democrats win more seats in 2022, which at the most seems unlikely, Biden is poised to mostly be a lame-duck president, legislatively speaking.
Most of the legislation Democrats have sought to pass thus far has been so radical that Republicans won’t support it. And so long as moderate Democrats like Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema refuse to abolish the filibuster, Democrats MUST obtain support from Republicans to pass almost everything.
The coronavirus relief bill that made it through the Senate on Sunday is a rare exception because it was passed as a budget reconciliation bill.
But for almost everything else, particularly anything as radical as the Equality Act or Sachs’ desired wealth tax, there’s virtually no chance of the legislation making it through Congress.
So much for “transformative” …
