‘Are YOU waking up at 2 am to respond to a gruesome murder?’ Fla Rep clobbers Dems on police reform

Freshman Florida Rep. Kat Cammack delivered an impassioned speech on the House floor Wednesday in defense of law enforcement officers across the country, including her own husband, who’s reportedly both a firefighter and a SWAT medic.

She delivered the speech in response to her Democrat colleagues pursuing a since-passed bill, the George Floyd Policing Act, that would defund the police.

She began her speech by hurling a SWAT vest on top of her desk and explaining that she understands the anger surrounding Minneapolis criminal suspect George Floyd’s death.

This bill is named after a man who was murdered by a police officer. The officer responsible should have never been allowed to don a badge and act on behalf of the agency sworn to protect its citizens. He should and is being held accountable,” she said.

Now, as a member of the first-responder family, I can say definitively on behalf of our officers that there is absolutely nothing, nothing that a good cop hates more than a bad cop. And as the wife of a first responder, this issue could not be more personal to me.”

As part of his job, Cammack continued, her husband must often wear a SWAT vest.

“Next to me here today you see one of his SWAT vests. This is the same vest that he wore for 14 hours while on a massive manhunt for a man who had just been released from prison who promptly raped and killed his girlfriend,” she said.

“It is the same vest that he wore while responding to a man who had barricaded himself with weapons, threatening to kill his own children. These are just some of the scenes that this vest and my husband has seen like so many of our LEOs.”

Listen to her whole speech below:

The problem, the congresswoman added, is that by defunding the police, Democrats would be depriving her husband of the tools he needs to perform his job safely.

The real threat here is not the dangerous situations that my husband has seen in protecting his community. It is the fact that this bill, and by extension you, Mr. Speaker, want to take this vest off my husband’s back,” she said.

I ask you, Mr. Speaker, and my colleagues who are considering voting for this bill, are you waking up at 2:00 am going to respond to a gruesome murder, are you missing your children’s birthday parties to respond to gang shootings?

She concluded her speech by admitting that there’s “absolutely room for us to approve” on police behavior and accountability, but also stressing that “the answer is not to defund the police.”

“What this bill ultimately does is defund the police. You want a better trained, more responsive police force in your hometown? Fully fund the police!” she said.

“You say this is a reform bill, and I say that’s BS. Mr, Speaker, your own conference members have been advocating for the defunding of our local police officers, calling them names that I cannot and will not repeat here today.”

Fact-check: TRUE.

Despite Cammack’s protestations, the bill passed 220-212, with Wisconsin Rep. Ron Kind and Maine Rep. Jared F. Golden being the only Democrats to vote against it.

One Republican, Rep. Lance Gooden, also voted for the bill, but he’s been adamant that he’d done so mistakenly and that he’s since reversed his vote.

According to NPR, the bill would ban chokeholds, qualified immunity and no-knock warrants. It’d also “mandate data collection on police encounters, prohibit racial and religious profiling and redirect funding to community-based policing programs.”

Following the bill’s passage Wednesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy issued a tweet accusing Democrats of having “just voted to defund the police.”

“The unfunded mandates in their bill, H.R. 1280, would cost police departments hundreds of millions of dollars—the equivalent of taking 3,000 cops or more off the streets. Our men and women in uniform deserve better,” he wrote.

That Cammack, a woman who’s intimately involved with law enforcement, agrees with McCarthy’s sentiment makes it clear that it’s certainly no exaggeration to say that the Democrat Party just voted to defund America’s law enforcement officers.
