Fox News host and personality Greg Gutfeld questioned what he saw as outsized media coverage of Tiger Woods’ vehicular accident on Tuesday as other Americans “are suffering right now.”
During a segment on “The Five” following news earlier in the day that Woods was injured in a single-vehicle accident outside of Los Angeles, co-host Dana Perino noted that the popular golfer has been subjected to intense media coverage for much of his career.
“Obviously, people want to read about Tiger Woods, watch Tiger Woods, and today’s no different,” she said before swinging it over to Gutfeld.
“Really, though? Everybody wants to hear about this for an hour? I don’t know,” Gutfeld began.

“I know our job is to overstate incidents like this,” he continued, as it sounded like Perino whispered into a hot mic, “Guys…”
“If we don’t overstate it, people might change the channel,” Gutfeld continued, adding that annually, Americans by the tens of thousands are killed and injured in motor vehicle accidents.
“We don’t even know what happened here,” the co-host noted. “I just think that, right now, my prayers are limited. There’s so many people that are suffering right now and I think sometimes the news does this deep dive,” he said. “Honestly, I think some people might just be like ‘We get it. We get it.’ There’s some real bad stuff going on in this world. Maybe we should focus on that stuff.”
“Alright,” Perino responded as Gutfeld tossed his hands up and said, “I’m here to give my opinion! So I know everybody hates me for that. But, sorry.”
“I hate him,” co-host Geraldo Rivera chimed in over crosstalk.
At that, Perino brought in network anchor Bret Baier, himself noted as an avid, skilled golfer and friend of Woods, which prompted a response from Gutfeld.
“Bret, I did not know — they didn’t tell me you were coming on. I swear to God I wouldn’t have said that,” he said, laughing.
“Hello, Greg,” a smiling Baier said in response, as other co-hosts of “The Five” could be heard laughing.
“Here’s the deal. This is why this is a bigger deal,” Baier began, saying “we should deal in facts,” which appeared to be a reference to Gutfeld’s earlier statement about a lack of publicly known information, at the time, regarding Woods’ accident.
Baier went on to report that Woods was conscious at the scene, was conversing with EMS and fire rescue personnel, and did sustain injuries to his legs. He also reported that Woods was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters who used an ax, not heavy equipment such as the “Jaws of Life,” to remove him from the vehicle and that he was late to a photoshoot with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and L.A. Chargers QB Justin Herbert.
He then attempted to explain the relevance of the wall-to-wall news coverage, noting that Woods was once again attempting to revive his golf career after his fifth back surgery recently.
“It is a comeback story because he’s had several comebacks throughout his career,” Baier said, adding that fellow golf legend Ben Hogan suffered leg injuries in a car crash seventy years ago, but came back to win several tournaments.
“This is a huge story because he’s bigger than life when it comes to golf and in sport in general. So the world is paying attention to something like this,” Baier added.
