School board members thought meeting was private, brutally trash parents who want school reopened

Board members at a school district in California were caught on video using derogatory language to slam parents who want them to reopen for in-person instruction as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes.

Video of the insulting Oakley, Calif. board members was posted to social media by the group Reopen California Schools.

Warning: Strong language

“Are we alone?” One board member asks after appearing to discuss an interaction with a parent. “B**ch, if you’re gonna call me out, I’m gonna f**k you up!

“You know, they forget that there’s real people on the other side of those letters that they’re writing,” another board member continued. “They want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back.”

Yet another board member appears to suggest that parents want their kids back in school so they can smoke marijuana at home.

The entire video was posted to YouTube.

“My question for these school board members, others like them, @WeAreCTA , and @GavinNewsom is if they plan to open schools before or after the next teen suicide? Before or after tens of thousands of more children’s live [sic] are destroyed?” Reopen California Schools posted on the group’s Twitter.

The comments from the school board members drew passionate responses.

Parents have been increasingly pushing for schools to be reopened as have some local school board officials around the country as it becomes more apparent that the longer kids are exposed only to virtual learning, the more harm it is doing.

Late last month, the Clark County school district, which encompasses Las Vegas, quickly reopened following a rash of student suicides.

“The spate of student suicides in and around Las Vegas has pushed the Clark County district, the nation’s fifth-largest, toward bringing students back as quickly as possible,” The New York Times reported. “This month, the school board gave the green light to phase in the return of some elementary school grades and groups of struggling students even as greater Las Vegas continues to post huge numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths.”

The Times went on to note that school officials in Clark County were not the only ones weighing reopening after being shuttered for nearly a year to in-person education.

“The risk of student suicides has quietly stirred many district leaders, leading some, like the state superintendent in Arizona, to cite that fear in public pleas to help mitigate the virus’s spread,” the paper reported.

“Kids are killing themselves because of isolation while teacher’s unions are fighting to keep schools closed despite schools not being a serious vector of disease transmission. Never forget this,” tweeted The Bulwark culture editor Sonny Bunch.

Data has shown for months that in-person education does not serve as superspreader events because kids and teens do not spread COVID.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that most school infections come from the surrounding community, not from within schools themselves.

Earlier this week, the Biden administration appeared to side with teacher’s unions in keeping schools closed until more federal money could be sent to make them ‘safer.’

“I’ll give you a word: money,” President Joe Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, told CNN.

He went on to seemingly blame school districts.

“I think what you’re seeing is schools that haven’t made the investments to keep students safe … We need to do things to open safely,” he added.
