New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an ostensible Catholic who reportedly supports “abortion on-demand,” is facing backlash for “appropriating” the religious observance of Lent to lend support to a totally unrelated cause.
The congresswoman announced Wednesday that she intended to adopt a vegetarian diet for this year’s Lent in memory of fellow New York Rep. Jamie Raskin’s son, Thomas “Tommy” Bloom Raskin, who sadly died of suicide at the age of 25 on New Year’s Eve.
She added that when she’d proposed the idea to Raskin, he’d asked her to “bring people along with you.” And so she was looking for partners to join her in the effort.
Look:
Ok everyone, I need help!
A few weeks ago I told @RepRaskin that this year I wanted to adopt a vegetarian diet for Lent in memory of his son Tommy.
Jamie said, “Well you’d have to do it the way Tommy would, which means bring people along with you!” ☺️
So, I have 3 requests:
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 18, 2021
1. Does anyone want to join me? Rules are 1) No judgement 2) Make it your own (you can go full 40 days, just veggie Mondays, etc 3) Be inclusive (no need to observe Lent to join)
2. Please comment w your favorite veggie recipes below! I would like to avoid 40 days of Easy Mac 🙃
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 18, 2021
3. If neither of the above apply but you are in a position to give or help others in this time, please consider doing so in the spirit of Tommy. He loved the world so much and dedicated his life to reducing suffering around the world. 💜
Thank you! https://t.co/VbJrcCQ3Ui

Some devout Catholics responded by raising concerns that Ocasio-Cortez was appropriating Lent for a cause unrelated to its true intent, which is to set aside time to reflect on the teachings and lessons of the Christian savior Jesus Christ in the weeks leading up to Easter.
Look:
While my heart is with @RepRaskin let’s make sure we focus lent on our savior Jesus Christ. As they respectfully don’t observe lent let’s fast, pray, and give up something for our Lord. Don’t use lent as a way to gain more followers. That is being disrespectful to Jesus.

This is exactly the opposite of what observing the Lenten season is about… please Stop referring to Lent in this way! It is demeaning to all Catholics! Your initiative is worthy… but please stop cloaking it in our sacred Catholic heritage. Matthew 6: 6-18

The purpose of giving something up for Lent is to prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, not to crowdsource recipes for your vegan experiment. Why do you feel the need to broadcast everything you do in life and push others to follow suit? Insecure much?

Are you a Christian or Catholic?Lent is a very personal & private fast, between you & God, not to be paraded in front of everyone. This is a very sacred time for Christians & Catholics,I hope you understand this, but by your public announcement of your “fast”, it seems you do not.

Lent is in memory of Jesus and he wasn’t a vegetarian.

Others questioned the sincerity of Ocasio-Cortez’s faith given her views on abortion.
The Susan B. Anthony List non-profit notes that last year, she voted in favor of a resolution that would have aided the effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
According to the non-profit, the amendment “has been interpreted by courts as installing a sweeping legal mandate for abortion on demand funded with taxpayer dollars, into the United States Constitution.”
It’s not clear how the congresswoman squares her ostensible Catholicism with her support for this arguably anti-Catholic, anti-Christian amendment.
Some people responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s announcement by asking why she wasn’t giving up abortion for Lent versus giving up meat:
So AOC if you are observing Lent, then you are Christian, right? While honoring Tommy is very nice, shouldn’t you give up supporting abortion and promoting anti-Semitism first? Just a thought… @AOC @RepAOC #Lent

@AOC are you kidding ? God abhors everything you believe. Do u know what Lent is? God hates abortion, loves Israel and loves religious freedom! My God, educate yourself

You observe Lent!? Why don’t you give up your radical support for Abortion for Lent!
— Beannaithe (@AmericasGreat76) February 19, 2021
You are a Catholic that supports abortion on demand but observes Lent? Pick a lane.

Lent? You are pro abortion baby killer.

None of this is to suggest that Raskin’s life, struggles and pro-vegan activism don’t deserve to be recognized and appreciated.
“By the age of 25, Thomas Bloom Raskin had already accomplished a great deal: He was a graduate of Amherst College who went on to intern at the Cato Institute and J Street, among other prominent organizations; a passionate vegan who wrote philosophical defenses of animal rights and converted those around him to giving up meat; a political writer who had essays published in The Nation and elsewhere; and a law student and teaching assistant at Harvard Law School who donated from his teaching salary to charities in his students’ names,” NPR notes of the deceased young man.
Nor is any of this to downplay the tragedy that befell the Raskin family.
“He began to be tortured later in his 20s by a blindingly painful and merciless ‘disease called depression,’ … a kind of relentless torture in the brain for him, and despite very fine doctors and a loving family and friendship network of hundreds who adored him beyond words and whom he adored too, the pain became overwhelming and unyielding and unbearable at last for our dear boy, this young man of surpassing promise to our broken world,” Raskin and his wife said in a statement released after their son’s death.
