12-yr-old boy shoots and kills home intruder to protect his 73 yr-old grandma

A 12-year-old North Carolina boy killed a home intruder in defense of his 73-year-old grandmother after two men allegedly broke into her home on Saturday, according to police and various media reports.

Officials with the Goldsboro Police Department said that a pair of masked suspects forcefully entered the home of Linda Ellis, a popular and well-liked figure in the community, and demanded that she give them her money.

According to WRAL, Ellis was allegedly shot by Khalil Herring. It’s not clear if the second suspect was armed.

“A 12-year-old juvenile occupant of the residence shot at the suspects with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee the area,” police noted in a statement, WRAL reported.

Goldsboro police arrived to find Ellis suffering from a non-fatal gunshot wound to the leg. She was reportedly taken to an area hospital and treated.

Ellis’s niece, Chiquita Coley, told WRAL it was hard to come to grips with what had happened.

“My phone was constantly ringing, and ringing and ringing,” Coley said. “I just couldn’t believe she been shot because she’s a good person.”

Shortly after the shootings, police spotted Herring, 19, at an intersection not far from Ellis’s resident after he fled. Local reports noted that he was also transported to Wayne UNC Health Care but died from his wound.

Both victim and the alleged robber were from Goldsboro, police said.

“Preliminary evidence suggests Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery,” authorities noted in their statement.

For her part, Coley decried senseless and random violence in the area.

“Why would somebody come into her house and do this? It’s got to stop. I don’t know what they’re thinking around here in Goldsboro, but it’s got to stop,” she told WRAL.

The outlet noted further that Goldsboro police are not expected to charge the 12-year-old for what appears to be an act of self-defense, though authorities are continuing to investigate the break-in and the subsequent shootings.

“They came in the house, I open the door, I open it, and they came in there. … One guy had a gun. They just put me down on the ground,” Randolph Bunn, Linda Ellis’ son, and the youth’s great uncle, told ABC7.

He said Ellis was in the kitchen when the two intruders broke through the door and past Bunn. “I don’t know why they shot her,” he said.

Herring allegedly “just shot his grandma,” Bunn said in his nephew’s defense. “He would have shot him too, he would’ve shot me too. He would’ve killed us all.”
