ABC panel: U.S. after Trump is post-war Germany, justifying Antifa-BLM violence as morally right

In a remarkable segment of ABC’s This Week, chief anchor George Stephanopoulos moderated a discussion that likened post-Trump America to Germany or Japan after World War II, or America following the Civil War, a segment that tried to justify violence on the left.

Media Research Center’s Newsbusters put together a clip of what it characterized as “ridiculous and repugnant pronouncements,” saying that ABC “was out to normalize dangerous thoughts and behavior.”

The pompous display passing as enlightened thought began with the network’s chief political analyst Matthew Dowd, a top campaign aide to George W. Bush in 2004, who appeared to justify what lies in store from a Biden administration in its so-called war on domestic terrorism.

“Other countries have gone through this before,” Dowd said. “Germany, Japan, South Africa, and the thing before you get to reconciliation and healing, you have some element of truth and accountability in this.”

“And even besides those foreign country examples, we have an example in our country during reconstruction in the aftermath of the Civil War when we went through — we were supposed to go through a process of truth and accountability, and changing the nature of what went on,” he continued. “And when Abraham Lincoln was killed and Andrew Johnson took over, reconciling – the idea of forming a thing and demanding truth was stopped.”

Dowd went on to say that this “resulted in this country of Jim Crow laws, it resulted in this country of the KKK, and it resulted in this country of 100 years more of a fight for justice and truth and equality in our country.”

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was also on the panel, and while quick to condemn the attack on the U.S. Capitol and agreeing that the impeachment of former President Trump was warranted, the Republican politician said if President Joe Biden wants to unite the country, he must condemn violence from the left too.

“You can’t just continue to talk about what happened on Capitol Hill, which deserves to be spoken about and all the facts need to come out, and those that are responsible need to be held responsible criminally and politically,” Christie said. “But so does the violence that’s happening in other parts of the country as well — we cannot allow that to be two different standards.”

Fellow panelist Rahm Emanuel, the former Obama aide who also served as mayor of Chicago, jumped in to suggest that violence on the left is morally justified.

“What I would say here, first of all, the president has spoken that there’s no place for violence,” he said. “But what I will reject is the idea that somehow what happened in Portland is morally equivalent to literally a Confederate flag and ‘6 million is not enough.’”

“One is defending the Constitution and the organizing principles and values of this country, and also prosecuting people who committed property crimes. And if you draw a moral equivalence you’re morally lost,” Emanuel snapped.

Christie countered to say it’s not about moral equivalence, but about consistency.

“The fact is,” he said, “for the people in Portland, for people in other places in this country, who have seen their cities and their neighborhoods destroyed and disrupted, their constitutional rights are being violated as well.”

Dowd brought about a fitting close to the clip with a rant distorting the effects of the last four years under Trump, while slamming Republicans as racists — all while running interference for Joe Biden.

“It is incredibly frustrating to listen to so many Republicans talk about, ‘Why isn’t Biden talking about this? Why isn’t Biden — we need unity and we need healing, and we need fiscal level of responsibility,'” Dowd spewed. “I mean, it’s the Triple Crown, American Pharaoh level of hypocrisy and dishonesty after what we witnessed the last four years in division, in polarization, and no condemning of white supremacists and white nationalists, throughout many Republicans who enabled this.”

“So, just give me a break about calling Joe Biden out for any of this right now because of what happened over the last four years,” he concluded.
