Homan: Buckle up for border surge like no other because of the words of Joe Biden

The former acting ICE director warned of the impending crisis that will be brought on by the incoming Biden administration in reversing President Trump’s border and immigration policies.

Thomas Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, expressed his concern over the border in an interview with Fox News, warning that President-elect Joe Biden’s words will directly lead to an unprecedented “surge” at the U.S. southern border.

Biden’s “words matter,” Homan told Fox News anchor John Roberts on Monday, reiterating that rolling back Trump’s strong border policies will have a negative impact on the country.

“The promises he has made are going to entice people to come to this country no matter what he says now. It’s already starting,” he said. “The criminal gangs have already figured out the transportation routes. The caravans are already loaded up and coming and more is going to come.”

“You’re going to see a surge at the border that we’ve never seen before because of the words of Joe Biden,” Homan warned.

Earlier this month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a warning to migrants about the risks involved with the potentially dangerous journey to the U.S., as Guatemalan officials reportedly deployed 4,000 soldiers to patrol their southern border.

A massive caravan of 9,000 illegal immigrants headed to the U.S. prompted a Biden transition official to allegedly say that those hoping for asylum under a new administration “need to understand they are not going to be able to come into the United States immediately.”

One Honduran migrant interviewed by CNN said Biden is “going to help all of us.”

Biden has promised a pathway to citizenship for those in the country illegally. Last month, he indicated he would not be rolling back Trump’s policies at one time because of the problems it would create, though he had vowed to sign sweeping immigration legislation on his first day in office.

“There does seem to be a recognition by the incoming president that if he were to roll back the Trump Administration policies it would create a huge problem on the border between the United States and Mexico,” Roberts said to Homan during the Monday discussion.

“Maybe he’s watching Fox News and our interviews because we’ve been talking about this for months. His words matter. Too little, too late, he’s not going to stop it,” Homan, a Fox News contributor, replied.

“The most disgusting thing about this is, he knew his words, he knew his promises would cause a surge,” Homan added. “Now he is saying no detention, no removals. He knew his words would cause this surge. It’s more important for him to win the votes from the left and be elected president than to protect this country. He put himself in front of the country and that to me is disgusting.”

Roberts noted that as the November presidential election was still being contested, and the voters were not yet certified, Biden went ahead and vowed he would send a bill to Congress to provide “a pathway to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented people in America.”

“What message does that send to people outside of this country?” the Fox News anchor asked Homan.

“First of all, he is misleading the American people, the former ICE director replied, saying the number is closer to 18 million.

“That is an enticement. That will bring more people to the border. The sad thing is we reward illegal behavior. Because this country is showing over and over again, enter this country illegally, ignore the courts, ignore your removal order, go hide out long enough and we are going to give you something,” he said.

“As long as we reward behavior, we’re never going to fix the border,” Homan emphasized. “Let’s plug the hole rather than bailing out the water in the boat. Let’s plug the hole and stop the illegal behavior first. Congress can fix the three loopholes we’ve asked them to close for three years, to stop the surge from coming. That needs to happen first.”

“One of the big problems, Tom, that the Trump administration had, was a lot of children, thousands of children got separated from their parents in a way that they don’t know if they can be reunited. The incoming President-elect said that he is going to work on that. That’s one of the first things he is going to work on. Is that a problem that really needs fixing?” Roberts asked.

Homan explained that it is a “misleading narrative, a false narrative.”

“A lot of parents have refused to be reunited with their children because their whole endgame is to get their children here to the United States to live with the other spouse that was living here illegally so they can get an American education, live the American life, and never go back to their homeland,” he said, pointing out that the reports never seem to focus on the 14,000 children who “were smuggled into the country because their parents hired a criminal organization to smuggle them.”
