The Daily Beast is being panned for claiming in a hit piece that actor Matthew McConaughey is “flirting with alt-right darlings,” though the left-wing site did not name names.
Entertainment reporter Laura Bradley’s article blasted conservatives who complain about “cancel culture” under a headline suggesting that McConaughey is cozying up with movements linked to white nationalism.
She ripped the top-ranked actor because he sat down with Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson as well as leading podcaster Joe Rogan in recent weeks to promote his newly-released memoir “Greenlights.”
But Bradley did not actually identify either Peterson or Rogan as “alt-right,” which is a term most often associated with white nationalist movements, in her story.
“Peterson is just one of several controversial figures who have coalesced in the past few years within the so-called “intellectual dark web”—a lot that also includes podcaster Joe Rogan and conservative pundit Ben Shapiro, among others,” Bradley wrote.
“But that moniker belies the true mundanity of these guys’ belief system—most of them largely spend their time complaining about anything that smacks of ‘political correctness’ and waiting for the yet-to-be-seen Armageddon that ‘cancel culture’ will surely one day usher in,” she added.
Her piece was published as scores of leading conservative figures, as well as President Donald Trump, have been booted from social media giants including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. It also comes as big tech including Amazon and Google appear to have teamed up to deplatform rising social media rival Parler, where many canceled conservative Twitter users were flocking.
For his part, Peterson merely rejects the concept of identity politics — the notion that skin color and/or ethnicity are the most important factors in determining who should have more political power in a very diverse United States. But his rejection includes white identity politics that are touted by alt-right supremacists like Richard Spencer.
And while Rogan has been panned for some views on issues such as transgenderism, he came out in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) during his second bid for the Democratic presidential nomination last year.
Bradley also criticized McConaughey and the opinions of his interviewers’ opinions on issues like police reform, cancel culture, and the “illiberal left,” among others. And the actor, who speaks often about his Christian faith, has also been taken to task by some on the left for referring to Trump as “our president” after he took office in January 2017, while urging liberals in Hollywood to “be constructive with him.”
Critics jumped on Bradley’s mischaracterizations, including Karol Markowicz of the New York Post.
“This piece is basically, ‘Cancel culture doesn’t exist but let’s cancel Matthew McConaughey just in case,” she wrote on Twitter.

“It does serious damage to actual efforts to counter and condemn the alt-right when you start suggesting mainstream voices are in the same category,” the user added.
“Write a whole article mocking the idea there’s a cancel culture. Editor slaps on headline calling Jordan Peterson ‘alt-right,’” added Washington Examiner columnist Tim Carney.
Bradley, however, wrote towards the end of her article that she wasn’t trying to “cancel” the actor.
