Barbara Boxer under fire, deregisters as ‘foreign agent’ for suspect Chinese surveillance firm

Former California Sen. Barbara Boxer has been outed for working as a “foreign agent” for a Chinese surveillance firm that’s allegedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution, internment, and alleged genocide of Uighur Muslims.

This makes Boxer the second California Democrat who in just a matter of a few weeks has been linked to one of the world’s most oppressive regimes.

Last Friday a political strategy and consulting firm named Mercury Public Affairs, filed a “Foreign Agents Registration” form with the Department of Justice on Boxer’s behalf.

The form specified that Boxer, who reportedly re-chairs the Los Angeles-based firm, would henceforth provide “strategic consulting services” to the Chinese surveillance firm Hikvision’s U.S. subsidiary.

The problem, besides Boxer working for any foreign entity, period, is that Hikvision is an extremely controversial, scandal-laden organization.

“In 2019, the Trump administration barred Hikvision from doing business with American firms absent a U.S. government license, citing the parent company’s alleged involvement in the repression of Muslim minorities in the Chinese region of Xinjiang. Last year it accused Hikvision of ties to the Chinese military and prohibited U.S. investment in the company,” Axios reported.

“The state-owned China Electronics Technology Group is Hikvision’s controlling stakeholder. Hikvision cameras have been installed at internment camps in Xinjiang, where more than 1 million Uighurs are estimated to have been imprisoned or subjected to forced labor.”

The move in 2019 by the Trump administration to blacklist Hikvision was supported by Uighur victims of China’s oppression:

In an initial statement to Axios, Boxer defended her work for Hikvision.

“When I am asked to provide strategic advice to help a company operate in a more responsible and humane manner consistent with U.S. law in spirit and letter, it is an opportunity to make things better while helping protect and create American jobs,” she reportedly wrote in an email.

However, her attitude abruptly changed after President-elect Joe Biden became aware of her work and responded by refunding a $500 donation she’d made to his inaugural committee.

In response, Boxer suddenly backtracked by deregistering as a foreign agent for Hikvision.

“My intent in agreeing to provide strategic advice to the company was based on my desire to help make them better in every way and preserve American jobs. However, due to the intense response to my registration, I have determined that my continued involvement has become a negative distraction for the effort so I will be deregistering,” she said to Axios.

She also issued a statement via Twitter, though it wasn’t well-received, as seen below:

Her last-minute reversal did nothing to ameliorate the growing impression that Democrats have an affinity for the CCP.

Like Sen. Rick Scott noted in a tweet, “The ties between the CCP and CA Dems are deeply concerning.”

Indeed, only weeks earlier Rep. Eric Swalwell, another California Democrat, was outed for having unknowingly allowed a Chinese spy to get close to him personally and work inside his 2014 re-election campaign.

According to reports, Swalwell promptly disassociated himself from the spy, Fang Fang, after the FBI informed him of her true allegiances in 2014 — though his disassociation did little to dampen the damage.

It didn’t help that he’d never broached the issue publicly. Not until Axios broke the story last month did anyone outside of his immediate circle know of it.

With Axios’s breaking of the story came a groundswell of anger and calls for him to resign:

He of course didn’t resign. Nor was he removed from the House Intelligence Committee, despite the risk of someone who’d been duped by a Chinese spy having access to America’s most important secrets.

All this comes roughly 2-1/2 years after another California Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, was outed for having unknowingly had a Chinese spy working as her staffer.

Despite being aware of the CCP’s ulterior motives as it pertains to the United States, not to mention its brutal treatment of Muslims, congressional Democrats keep hobnobbing with the Chinese for reasons that remain quite unclear.
