Dueling demonstrations in San Diego over the weekend escalated at one point as Trump supporters were pepper-sprayed and chased while being verbally accosted by profanity, as seen in video from the incident on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach.
San Diego police, who reported that they were also targeted with objects and pepper spray during the protests Saturday, declared the gathering “unlawful” in the afternoon but later allowed the Trump supporters to march, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Videos posted from the scene on Twitter showed the verbal confrontation as the Trump supporters were aggressively confronted by an Antifa group armed with a baseball bat and chemical sprays. Someone waving a large Antifa flag could be seen in the video before someone pulled out a can and sprayed it into the Trump supporters’ faces.

A heavy police presence worked to keep the opposing groups apart as tensions flared between what the newspaper described as about “100 Trump supporters and 100 counterprotesters, some of whom described themselves as anti-fascists.
Trump rally in PB has turned violent. Counter protesters showed up and are chasing the Trump protesters out. Pepper spray has been discharged by protesters. A lot of police officers are standing by. Be careful if you’re waking through PB on the beach. @fox5sandiego pic.twitter.com/2yB0bjxtsh

The pro-Trump “Patriot March” set to begin at 2 p.m. had been planned before last week’s events at the U.S. Capitol. About one hour before the start time, a crowd of Black Lives Matter supporters and Antifa members gathered at the pier, many of whom wore black clothing and sported “Antifa” shirts and hats, according to the Union-Tribune.

Signs, including one that said “No Nazis in PB,” were displayed by the counterprotesters who screamed at the Trump supporters, and eventually, the demonstrations forced the shutdown of Mission Boulevard near the Crystal Pier.

Police asked all to disperse about 2:30 p.m., calling the gathering an unlawful assembly at that point as dozens of officers in riot gear were on-hand.
“Those who remain or return against this lawful order may be cited/arrested and risk exposure to chemical agents & less-lethal force applications,” the San Diego Police Department tweeted.

Other messages from the SDPD said that officers had been hit with a glass bottle and that eggs and rocks were being thrown at them as well.
A couple more rocks were just thrown at our officers.

“When rocks, bottles, pepper spray, and other objects are thrown or used on our officers, actions will be taken against those who commit violent acts,” another tweet warned.
Both groups of protesters had left Pacific Beach by 6 p.m., according to police.
Both groups have separated from Hornblend St. & Mission Blvd.
We will continue to monitor both groups to help facilitate peaceful protests. However, we will not tolerate acts of violence.

Two adults were arrested for allegedly failing to disperse and a minor was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer, Police Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said Sunday, adding that five officers suffered minor injures but did not need any medical attention.
