A new poll showed that a majority of Republicans are holding Joe Biden accountable for the group of protesters who stormed the U.S. Capitol this week.
While Democrats and even some members of President Trump’s own party are condemning him for allegedly inciting the mob that breached the building and for the deaths that ensued, many GOP voters in a new YouGov Direct poll believe that the Democratic president-elect is to blame.
A majority of Republican voters who were surveyed in the poll conducted Wednesday, after the protesters had been dispersed and one woman was shot by a Capitol Police officer, believe that Biden is “a great deal to blame” for the actions of those who charged the Capitol building.
“To what extent, if at all, do you think [Donald Trump / Congressional Republicans who said they would vote against certifying the election results / Joe Biden] is to blame for the actions of those who stormed the Capitol building?” the survey asked nearly 1,400 registered voters.
Biden is is seen as “the biggest culprit in the eyes of Republicans, at 52%, compared to 28% for Donald Trump and 26% for the Congressional Republicans who opposed certification of the election results,” the poll reported.
Just 28 percent of Republican voters blamed the president and 26 percent pointed to congressional Republicans who had promised to fight the Electoral College vote results from several swing states.

A majority of all the voters polled, 55 percent, said that Trump is “a great deal to blame.”
After Congress confirmed Biden victory early Thursday morning, following hours of debate as lawmakers met to certify the electoral votes, the president pledged there would be “an orderly transition” of power when the Democrat president-elect is sworn in.
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said in a statement.
The YouGov poll showed that 45 percent of registered Republican voters supported the actions of the demonstrators on Wednesday while 43 percent opposed. Nearly two-thirds, or 63 percent, of all voters surveyed said they “strongly” opposed the storming of the Capitol, with 62 percent of them saying they saw the events as a threat to democracy.
“Among Republicans, however, only a quarter (27%) think this should be considered a threat to democracy, with two-thirds (68%) saying otherwise,” the poll reported.

The poll found that 56 percent of those who approved of the actions of demonstrators “believe enough fraud took place at the presidential election to change the outcome.”
“While 59% of voters who are aware of the events at the Capitol perceive them as being more violent than more peaceful (28%), the opposite is true of Republicans. By 58% to 22%, Republicans see the goings on as more peaceful than more violent,” the YouGov poll found.
On the question of agreeing with some lawmakers that Trump should be removed from office immediately over the events that unfolded Wednesday, 85 percent of Republicans found the idea to be “inappropriate.” Among all voters surveyed, 42 percent agreed that it would not be appropriate for Trump to be removed from office immediately.
The poll of 1,448 registered voters, included 1,397 “who were aware of the events at the Capitol.”
The survey reported a 3.3 percent margin of error.
