Actress Jennifer Aniston is not winning any new “Friends” after sharing a picture of an insensitive, to some, Christmas tree ornament on her Instagram page, although other fans are coming to her defense.
Aniston, best known for her starring role as Rachel Green in the hit NBC sitcom Friends which aired from 1994 to 2004, posted an image of the circular wooden accessory engraved with the words “Our first pandemic 2020,” which prompted a backlash on Twitter.
The image, however, seems to have since been deleted from the Instagram page, which has a staggering 36 million followers.
Many of the easily outraged users on the social media platform accused the actress, 51, of contemptuously minimizing COVID-19, especially in the context of families who couldn’t spend time together over the holiday because of coronavirus concerns, particularly in areas where infections are said to be spiking.
In the alternative, others suggested that the Anniston imagery shouldn’t be taken so seriously.
“A handful noted that Aniston has been using her platform to advocate for both small businesses impacted by the pandemic as well as to encourage her followers to wear a mask to help curtail its spread,” Fox News reported.
In late October, Biden-Harris supporter Anniston used her Instagram platform to post a photo of herself placing her mail-in vote in a mail box and above a message that contained a slew of anti-Trump, left-wing talking points. For that and other reasons, she is likely to avoid the cancel culture in the controversy, if you call it that, over the Christmas ornament. Plus, even on a good day, celebrities are out of touch.

Parenthetically, some Twitter users have pointed out that this ornament is apparently available on Etsy, the popular crafts marketplace website. A quick visit reveals that the decoration with the “our first pandemic 2020 language” is currently offered on the site in a variety of styles.
As alluded to above, lots of folks are weighing in on the trinket turmoil. Here is just a small sample of the response:
Give me a break. All you ppl trying to cancel everyone is ridiculous. If we’ve progressed so much in life, why are there more shootings etc. If this upsets you, life has been pretty smooth sailing for you.

This was clearly meant with humour. Why are we giving this air with all the actual things in the world that we could be offended by? Don’t enable that faux rage in people, it’s not productive

why do would she think this was a good idea? why do celebrities not use logic? why

For those saying to lighten up, take a second and ask yourself if you would hang up an ornament like this on your tree if your closest family member died from COVID. Would you hang this if your spouse, child, grandparent, cousin, best friend, etc. died from COVID?

Anyone who is angry or upset by this piece of wood hanging on a strangers tree that you will never see should contemplate if their existence is necessary to this world!!!

And they’re the same people saying “we’re in this together”! Smh. This only gives more proof that wealthy and celebrities live on an entirely different planet earth compared to the working/middle class folks
