A much older Chevy Chase is reprising his role of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” character Clark Griswold to sell cars.
Not just any car, but a tortured 2021 version of the iconic Ford Mustang that derives its horsepower from electric batteries — you have to admit, there’s a certain irony in Chevy selling a Ford.
Chase appears in a commercial for the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E along with his on-screen wife Beverly D’Angelo that’s set to run during the primetime reairing of the “Saturday Night Live Christmas Special” on Dec. 22, Fox News reported.
Already released on YouTube, Griswold is seen trying to illuminate his home with a blinding array of Christmas lights, only to have a problem with the power supply — a problem his wife, Ellen, corrects with she flips the power switch on while plugging in a shiny Mustang Mach-E.
(Before you lose all faith in society, Ford will be selling a traditional, V8-powered Mustang Mach 1 also.)
Griswold’s father-in-law reminisces in the ad about having his own Mustang “back when cars made sounds,” as the family is more impressed with the car than they are the Christmas lights.

As Fox News reported, while quiet, the Mach-E “does emit a hum at speeds under 20 mph to alert pedestrians to its presence and can fill the cabin with a digital recreation of a V8 engine.”
Which sounds a lot like watching NFL games in empty stadiums while the networks pipe in crowd noises.

Prices start at $43,995, but it qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit that brings it down to $36,495. That gets you a rear-wheel-drive Mach-E Select with a standard-size battery pack and an unimpressive range of 211 miles per charge, but there are other models available that can go as far as 300 miles for as little as $51,100, or $43,600 after the credit.
As for Chevy Chase, as the article denotes, he is a Saturday Night Live legend, last appearing on the program during its 40th anniversary special in 2015.
But he’s reportedly banned from hosting the show due to past questionable on-set behavior. In a 2018 Washington Post interview, Chase slammed today’s show, calling it the “worst f—–g humor in the world.”
The Mustang commercial was produced by SNL producer Broadway Video, according to Fox News, so all is apparently well.
Sorely missing in the ad is Trump-supporting Randy Quaid’s Cousin Eddie character, as social media users pointed out.
