If you’ve been thinking about committing a crime, now is the time. You will never have a better opportunity to get away with it. The rule of law has been under attack since the Obama administration took over in 2009. We are witnessing an era in which contempt is being shown for the law by a government that refuses to enforce its own statutes.
To the casual observer, it might seem that the US has no justice enforcement on either a federal or local level. The Justice Department and FBI have given a pass to a long list of felons from the Obama administration, notably Obama himself and Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, James Comey, and Andrew McCabe. The intention of many local law enforcement officials is to protect criminals at the expense of victims, a total perversion of the legal system. We have evidence of violent crimes that are not prosecuted and violent criminals who are released from prison under the guise of COVID. More frightening than any of these, we are witnessing the theft of a presidential election. Instead of being up in arms, the public has been indoctrinated to accept anarchy as the “new normal.”
New York City is a good case in point. During the Giuliani period, the city practiced “broken windows” policing where even the most trivial crimes were prosecuted. Violent criminals received a clear message that their nefarious activities would not be tolerated. It worked. Crime statistics plummeted and the city experienced a renaissance. Now, thanks to Mayor De Blasio, the reverse has occurred. Crime is out of control because criminals know they will most likely get away with a slap on the wrist.
Another example of urban lawlessness is developing in Los Angeles, where the new District Attorney, George Gascon, has announced his aversion to prosecuting criminal activity. LA will not enforce laws pertaining to trespassing, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence. Cash bail is out. “Hey criminals,” said Bill O’Reilly, “this is the best thing that’s ever happened to you.” California passed Proposition 47, which reduced the classification of most nonviolent property and drug crimes from a felony to a misdemeanor. As many as 10,000 inmates became eligible to return to the streets. If one of them should happen to burglarize your home, he will walk away if the value of the stolen goods is under $950.
Lisa Herbold, chair of the Seattle City Council’s Public Safety Committee, has introduced legislation to “excuse and dismiss” almost all misdemeanor crimes committed in Seattle by “persons with symptoms of addiction or mental disorder.” Herbold wants to create a legal defense for anyone who commits a crime in order “to meet a basic need to survive.” Looting a wide screen television would presumably fall in that category.
Rioters, looters, and arsonists in our major cities have gotten off scot free while the McCloskeys in St. Louis and Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha are being prosecuted despite videos that prove they acted in self-defense. The mayors of New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and many other cities have decided that they are not obliged to enforce federal immigration laws. In these “sanctuary cities,” undocumented aliens are not challenged by local law enforcement nor are felons turned over to federal authorities as required by law.
As part of the fallout from the George Floyd incident, many cities are defunding their police departments. Christopher Rufo in city-journal.org reports that activists are building a case not just to reform policing—viewed by them as an oppressive, violent, and racist institution—but to do away with it altogether. “When I first heard this slogan, I assumed that it was a figure of speech, used to legitimize more expansive criminal justice reform,” says Rufo. “But after reading the academic and activist literature, I realized that ‘abolish the police’ is a concrete policy goal.”
On the national scene, the DOJ under Holder, Lynch, Sessions, and Barr has suppressed investigations of Hillary Clinton, James Comey, and Joe Biden. The Obama administration spied on the Trump campaign without consequences. “The president has been a crime victim and the Justice Department has done nothing about it,” says Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “In many ways the Justice Department enabled the criminality.” According to the Wall Street Journal, Attorney General Barr knew about several investigations into Hunter Biden since at least this spring and “worked to avoid their public disclosure during the heated election campaign.” The Durham investigation has been going on since April 2019 with no results. “They do nothing,” says Lou Dobbs. “They help no one except their swamp friends. It’s disgusting what we’re watching.”
It is irresponsible and criminal when elected public officials encourage disrespect for the laws they are sworn to defend. This is part of the “new normal.” Citizens have no confidence in the legal system. Under a Biden/Harris administration, the situation is likely to get a lot worse. If we are to regard the US as a civilized nation, this has to stop.
