Geraldo echoes left’s knee-jerk hysteria, slams Rush Limbaugh for ‘reckless’ comments on ‘secession’

Geraldo Rivera slammed conservative talk radio king Rush Limbaugh for “reckless” and “irresponsible” remarks about the division in America.

The Fox News contributor joined countless others in mischaracterizing Limbaugh’s comments on the nation heading “toward secession,” blasting the view as “treason” during an appearance on The Story Thursday. Rivera seemed to take Fox News host Martha MacCallum by surprise with his forceful reaction to Limbaugh’s contention, even seeming to mock the conservative giant for his view of liberal New Yorkers.

MacCallum asked Rivera on Thursday if he thought it was a “possibility” that the current divisions in the U.S. could break up the nation, bringing up the comments from “The Rush Limbaugh Show.”

“The country used to have shared vision over all of what it meant to be American,” MacCallum said. “Even Rush Limbaugh warning that he thinks we might be headed in a dangerous direction, an actual separation of the states.”

Limbaugh told his listeners Wednesday that he hoped there was a “way to unite and win,” but acknowledged his fear that the nation is “trending toward secession.” He lamented the political divide in America after being asked if Republicans could ever win an election again without taking back Democrat cities like Philadelphia and New York.

Limbaugh doubted there can be a “peaceful coexistence” between liberals and conservatives in America’s current climate and added, “I actually think that we’re trending toward secession.”

“And I know that there’s a sizable and growing sentiment for people who believe that that is where we’re headed, whether we want to or not — whether we want to go there or not,” he continued, adding that he is not yet sold on the idea.

Rivera, like many others who had knee-jerk reactions to key words in Limbaugh’s remarks, missed the point the radio host was making, Instead, attacking him for allegedly advocating for civil war.

“I think talk of secession is treason, Martha, I want to be very clear,” Rivera responded to MacCallum asking him about Limbaugh’s “profound and challenging statement.”

“Rush Limbaugh is a powerhouse broadcaster. He is one in a zillion, they come along once in a generation, but that talk is reckless, it’s irresponsible,” Rivera continued.

“I had to laugh, Rush goes on to say that people where, he has no idea what people in New York are thinking, they are so different they are like a different species,” he added.

“Half of New York lives in Florida where Rush Limbaugh lives, it’s preposterous. I live in Ohio, a red state. I strongly supported President Trump, but also pro-gun control, pro-immigration reform, I’m pro-choice. I think leaders who accentuate the differences and exacerbate the divide are themselves responsible,” Rivera argued.

“Well, that’s a strong charge,” MacCallum noted after Rivera’s rebuttal. “It’s a discussion that’s being had in a lot of places.”

Limbaugh clearly stated he thought the nation is “trending toward secession” and was not advocating for a split, but critics like Rivera jumped on the remarks to bash him for everything from “sedition” to “treason.” Many on Twitter accused Limbaugh of saying something he didn’t, and soon got the phrase “civil war” trending.

Limbaugh addressed the issue on his radio show Thursday, sparking more “fake news” from the liberal media which declared that the conservative had now “backtracked” on his secession claims.

“I simply referenced what I have seen other people say about how we are incompatible, as currently divided, and that secession is something that people are speculating about,” Limbaugh told his listeners.

“I am not advocating it, have not advocated it, never have advocated it, and probably wouldn’t. That’s not something — 32 years — that’s not the way I’ve decided to go about handling disagreements with people on the left,” he added.
