Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley revealed that her sister-in-law died recently after contracting COVID-19.

The former Republican governor of South Carolina tweeted that the sister of her husband Michael had died the day before Thanksgiving due to the coronavirus. Rhonda Lee Nelson, who was 53 years old, had been living in West Milton, Ohio, according to an online obituary.

“Today we said goodbye to Michael’s sister, Rhonda, who passed the day before Thanksgiving of Covid,” Haley tweeted on Tuesday.

“She ministered to many inside and outside of the church. She loved God, her family & all who knew her. She will be missed,” she wrote, adding heart and praying hands emojis.

A memorial service was held for Nelson, who died Nov. 25, at the Shepherd’s Field Christian Church in Potsdam, Ohio.

The obituary offered gratitude to the many family and friends “who have all showed their love for her through the years and even greater through her last days.”

Haley did not provide any further details on the death of her sister-in-law, but in Ohio, where Nelson lived, new coronavirus cases have increased over the past two weeks from 7,618 on Nov. 22 to 8,656 on Dec. 6, according to an Associated Press analysis of The COVID Tracking Project’s data.

According to The Columbus Dispatch:

Ohio surpassed 500,000 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday —meaning one of every 23 Ohioans has contracted the virus — while setting a new high for confirmed daily infections.

Ohio’s seven-day average positive rate on coronavirus tests also clicked up to 16% after standing at 2.7% in late September.

Back in April amid the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Haley had launched the ‘Stop Communist China’ petition in an effort to urge Congress to end America’s reliance on China for critical medical supplies and pharmaceuticals and to investigate whether the communist nation initially covered up the virus outbreak.

“China’s Communist government needs to be held accountable for their role in lying about the coronavirus pandemic, and the US Congress needs to respond – now,” Haley said at the time in promoting the petition.

Haley, who was selected by President Donald Trump to serve as ambassador to the United Nations when she was South Carolina governor in late 2016, recently engaged in a war of words with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Haley responded to a tweet by the New York Democrat who argued that the government needs to “pay people to stay at home” in order to combat the virus.

“AOC, Are you suggesting you want to pay people to stay home from the money you take by defunding the police? Or was that for the student debts you wanted to pay off, the Green New Deal or Medicare for All?” the former diplomat asked in a tweet last month.

Ocasio-Cortez blasted Haley as “utterly embarrassing” but many see the former governor and vocal Trump supporter as a top GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
