A columnist with the Boston Globe was blasted on Twitter Saturday after accusing supporters of President Donald Trump of being no better than the brutal terrorist group known as ISIS.
In her tweet, Renée Graham posted a photo of a caravan of flag-adorned vehicles supporting President Trump side by side with one of a caravan of Islamic State fighters sporting the ISIS flag.

Graham was immediately blasted on social media for her inflammatory post.
“The group on the left wants to make our country better for all of its citizens. The group on the right wants to throw you off a tall building, cut your head off, set you on fire, submerge you in a cage, or stone you. See the difference?” Cari Kelemen, a conservative podcaster, wrote in response.

“Well, the group on the right would toss gays from the roof. That’s a pretty big difference,” another user wrote, to which Graham responded: “I almost admire your optimism.”
In fact, the Trump administration launched a global initiative to decriminalize homosexuality in February 2019 after a young gay man was hanged in Iran.
Initially, the effort was headed by then-U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, who was the highest-profile openly gay member of the Trump administration.
Bans on homosexuality are mostly concentrated in Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean, NBC News reported.
“It is concerning that, in the 21st century, some 70 countries continue to have laws that criminalize LGBTI status or conduct,” said a U.S. official involved in organizing the event.
The initiative seeks to work through existing organizations like the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. In addition, the administration is working with countries where laws recognizing and protecting gay rights exist.
“Narrowly focused on criminalization, rather than broader LGBT issues like same-sex marriage, the campaign was conceived partly in response to the recently reported execution by hanging of a young gay man in Iran, the Trump administration’s top geopolitical foe,” NBC News noted.
Writing in the German newspaper Bild that month, Grenell said the hanging should serve as “a wake-up call for anyone who supports basic human rights.”
“This is not the first time the Iranian regime has put a gay man to death with the usual outrageous claims of prostitution, kidnapping, or even pedophilia. And it sadly won’t be the last time,” Grenell wrote. “Barbaric public executions are all too common in a country where consensual homosexual relationships are criminalized and punishable by flogging and death.”
Last month, a survey conducted by Hornet, a gay male dating app, found that 45 percent of its U.S. users said they planned to vote for President Trump.
