Although it’s relatively rare that a Republican candidate gets any celebrity, or quasi-celebrity, endorsements, President Donald Trump seems to be making inroads in that space, at least insofar as the sports world is concerned. The latest high-profile luminary to back the POTUS is Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
The Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP quarterback who spent most of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers made his voting intentions evident on Twitter in reflecting what a lot of normal, law-abiding Americans are thinking as they head to the polls (if they haven’t cast a ballot already):
“My Vote is for what makes this country great, freedom of speech & religion, 2nd [Amendment]. hard working tax paying citizens, police & military. In this election, we have freedom of choice, which all should respect. For me & these principles, my Vote is for @RealDonaldTrump.”
Earlier this month, Favre discussed the blowback that he previously received merely for playing golf with President Trump in July 2020.
Favre insisted that it was an honor to hit the links with the president, regardless of the individual who holds the office at the time. “I told all the haters out there: I would go play golf with Barack Obama had he asked me. It’s an honor.”
Without then explicitly endorsing him, Favre said that Trump has done a good job for the country.
My Vote is for what makes this country great, freedom of speech & religion, 2nd Amnd, hard working tax paying citizens, police & military. In this election, we have freedom of choice, which all should respect. For me & these principles, my Vote is for @RealDonaldTrump. #Vote ☑️🇺🇸

Watch Brett Favre ask President Trump during a virtual town hall about the controversial mixing of sports and politics, an answer which may have influenced his endorsement:

Another retired quarterback, Jay Cutler (who is also known as a reality TV star with his then-wife Kristin Cavallari) has jumped on the Trump Train via Instagram with a screenshot of golf legend Jack Nicklaus’ Trump endorsement and a comment that reads “Never a doubt.”
Nicklaus, who holds the record for winning the most major PGA championships, noted among other things that the election “is not a personality contest. It’s about patriotism, policies and the people they impact.”
He declared that “Donald Trump’s policies will bring the American dream to many families across the nation who are still trying to achieve it.”

Trump has also won the support of rapper Lil Wayne.

With that in mind, Pro-Trump pundit Robby Starbuck observed that Trump is racking up some interesting, and possibly influential endorsements in and out of sports (that also may include hip-hop mogul 50 Cent):
Trump has endorsements from Lil Wayne, Jack Nicklaus, Jay Cutler, Lil Pump, Mariano Rivera, Nearly every police union in the US, Dana White, Waka Flocka, Jorge Masvidal, Black Elected Democrat reps in Flint MI + DeKalb County GA and Democrat Minnesota iron range mayors. Big tent!

Any affiliation or perceived affiliation with a Republican or a conservative — particularly in connection with the MAGA movement — usually spells immediate doom for someone’s career in the entertainment industry, unless they are well along in an established career. This is 2020, however, and all bets are off.
