CNN and MSNBC were blasted on social media after the two cable news outlets honed in on the coronavirus pandemic rather than the historic swearing-in ceremony for new Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett Monday night at the White House.

During a segment on his program, MSNBC host Chris Hayes claimed that Barrett’s swearing-in ceremony “led to the deaths of probably 100,000 Americans” as the network displayed a graphic proclaiming “225,000 dead.”

The segment was tweeted out by 2020 Trump campaign rapid response director Steve Guest, who called it “UNHINGED.”

“We can’t do anything about the lives we’ve lost or Amy Coney Barrett being on the Supreme Court, she’s gonna be now,” Hayes complained. “So all we can do is take that rage and channel it, rise up together as a country to kick them out of power to begin some work to repairing what they’ve broken, and mourning those we’ve lost.”

Meanwhile, former Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell ripped CNN for the network’s “non-stop” fear-mongering over the pandemic.

“CNN is non-stop scaring people about Covid. They never give the percentage of people who get it and recover quickly. It’s politics for them. It’s not journalism. It’s activism,” he wrote on Twitter.

NewsBusters Managing Editor Curtis Houck took a similar route in criticizing CNN’s coverage of the confirmation by focusing instead on the pandemic and claiming the ceremony will be a “superspreader” event.

“This CNN chyron isn’t news. It’s vile, poisonous propaganda. They’re not a news organization. Do they have any definitive proof it’ll happen? No, but they don’t care,” he wrote.

Other users also criticized both networks for their focus on the virus.

At the White House Monday following a day of campaigning, President Donald Trump praised Barrett and called her appointment “a momentous day for America, for the United States Constitution and for the fair and impartial rule of law.”

“The faithful application of the law is the cornerstone of our republic. That is why as president, I have no more solemn obligation and no greater honor than to appoint Supreme Court justices,” he continued.

On that point, Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton noted the historic nature of the event in that Barrett is the high court’s first conservative justice.

The president also said Barrett is “one of our nation’s most brilliant legal scholars, and she will make an outstanding justice on the highest court in our land” before she was sworn in by Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, now the Supreme Court’s longest-serving member after the passing last month of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom Barrett is replacing.

The appointment enraged Democrats as well, including leftist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who tweeted, “Expand the court” after Barrett’s confirmation.

“Republicans do this because they don’t believe Dems have the stones to play hardball like they do,” she added. “And for a long time they’ve been correct. But do not let them bully the public into thinking their bulldozing is normal but a response isn’t. There is a legal process for expansion.”

Human Events editor Will Chamberlain countered AOC’s court-packing demand with a constitutional change of his own.
