National Public Radio ignited scathing backlash after making it clear it was choosing to protect Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden rather than publish stories about his son’s email scandal.
The publicly funded media organization came under fire for its blatant disregard of journalistic standards as it dismissed the bombshells on alleged corruption by Hunter Biden as assertions that “don’t amount to much.” A tweet on the official page of NPR’s Public Editor and the statement by its managing editor Terence Samuel set off immediate criticism and demands to cut off funding.
“We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions,” Samuel told Kelly McBride, of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.
“And quite frankly, that’s where we ended up, this was … a politically driven event and we decided to treat it that way,” he added, according to McBride who documented the response in an NPR blog linked to in a tweet by the NPR Public Editor account on Thursday.
Why haven’t you seen any stories from NPR about the NY Post’s Hunter Biden story? Read more in this week’s newsletter➡️ https://t.co/CJesPgmGvo pic.twitter.com/jAi7PnpbZf

“Someone please explain why NPR has apparently not reported on the Joe Biden, Hunter Biden story in the last week or so that Joe did know about Hunter’s business connections in Europe that Joe had previously denied having knowledge?” NPR listener Carolyn Abbott reportedly asked the outlet.
“The handful of stories that NPR has produced about the NY Post investigation have been limited to how Facebook and Twitter are restricting distribution of the story or how families of those seeking treatment for addiction are impacted by the portrayal of Hunter Biden’s struggle,” McBride explained in the blog after noting that “the biggest reason you haven’t heard much on NPR about the Post story is that the assertions don’t amount to much. ”
“There are many, many red flags in that New York Post investigation,” McBride claimed.
“Intelligence officials warn that Russia has been working overtime to keep the story of Hunter Biden in the spotlight,” she added, asserting that how the younger Biden’s laptop was obtained by “Trump associates” is something that just “seems suspect.”
This inane take on the story and reasons not to cover it were slammed by, among others, President Donald Trump’s eldest son who called it out as “bullsh–.”
Amazing that @NPR actually has the balls to post this bullshit the same day this text message was released, directly implicating Joe Biden in Hunter’s corrupt schemes.
The media is doing everything they can to protect Joe Biden & hide the truth from the American people! #JoeKnew https://t.co/6ZUBmc4SSc pic.twitter.com/L6IDh4UxXh

There were countless demands to end the tax-payer funding of the non-profit media company, including from the Twitter account for House Judiciary Republicans.
Defund NPR. https://t.co/viOnuPZjey

“Defund NPR. American taxpayer dollars should not be out there being utilized to push false propaganda and cover up for Joe Biden’s corruption!” trump Jr. tweeted. “It’s been corroborated with a third-party witness who is on the emails what a disgrace NPR has become.”
“Why do you people get our tax dollars again?” conservative radio host Dana Loesch asked on Twitter.
“Your taxpayer dollars at work,” Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro tweeted.
Cancel NPR. They shouldn’t receive any public funding if they’re going to be so politically partisan.

and it’s not just the hunter biden stuff. do you think your average republican voter listens to NPR? it’s supposed to be for everyone and they make absolutely no effort to even gesture towards half the country that helps keep its lights on

Others called out the media company’s dereliction of journalistic duty.
How exactly is doing what is supposed to be your job of reporting and investigating a story with credible sources to be a “waste of time?”

Where was NPR’s concern about “wasting time” when they wrote 155 stories about the bogus Steele Dossier? https://t.co/uaD7ItdXIW pic.twitter.com/qWS2PrxBXH

And many on Twitter slammed NPR for what it was basically saying between the lines.
“NPR proudly announces it is more openly aligning itself with Joe Biden’s campaign, in this case by covering up a major Biden scandal and indisputably important national news story so that it can assist their preferred candidate,” the Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway tweeted.
“The first news’ organization in history to ever call doing their jobs reporting and investigating a story a “waste of time,” NewsBusters added on Twitter.
You are the enemy of the people.

Hello everyone! It’s @NPRpubliceditor here and just letting you know we’re determined not to do any journalism that reflects badly on the Bidens, but we’ll keep reporting on Trump’s taxes and if he’s a Russian agent. https://t.co/SxTiC9YP9G
