U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not remain silent for long as the issue of fracking was brought up during the vice presidential debate.
The New York Democrat appeared to criticize Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a tweet Wednesday after Harris repeatedly insisted that Joe Biden is not looking to ban hydraulic fracturing. Vice President Mike Pence had confronted his opponent during the debate about her record and that of the Democratic presidential nominee in their previous flip-flopping comments about the practice.
Harris was fact-checked in real-time Wednesday as she insisted the Biden administration will create new jobs based on “clean energy and renewable energy,” and will absolutely not ban fracking. The claim was met with immediate rebuttals, including video proof tweeted by President Trump showing Harris vowing to end the practice.
“I will repeat, and the American people know, that Joe Biden will not ban fracking. That is a fact,” Harris argued on Wednesday, despite the fact that both she and Biden have said otherwise.

As the candidates debated environmental issues on Wednesday, Harris repeatedly defended Biden’s position on the fracking issue which Ocasio-Cortez referred to as “bad” in a tweet.
“Fracking is bad, actually,” the progressive New York congresswoman tweeted.

The far-left wing of the Democratic Party has called on Biden to back the Green New Deal proposed by Ocasio-Cortez, who serves on the campaign’s climate task force. Biden has not done so directly but has spoken out about his view on fracking several times in his campaign.
Joe Biden claimed he “never told” far-left activists he will get rid of fracking.

“I am not banning fracking. Let me say that again: I am not banning fracking no matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me,” the former vice president said at a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania in August.
During Wednesday’s vice presidential debate in Utah, Pence pushed back on Harris’ narrative.
“Look, Sen. Harris, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own facts. You yourself said on multiple occasions when you were running for president that you would ban fracking,” he said.
Kamala Harris has proclaimed, “There’s no question, I’m in favor of banning fracking.”
REMINDER: A ban on fracking would eliminate 19 MILLION jobs across the country between 2021–2025, while reducing our GDP by $7.1 TRILLION.#VPDebatepic.twitter.com/9xlnmiVZtJ

Ocasio-Cortez introduced a national fracking ban in the House earlier this year which sought to ban fracking in the U.S. by 2025.
Fracking is destroying our land and our water. It is wreaking havoc on our communities’ health. We must do our job to protect our future from the harms caused by the fracking industry. That is why I am proud to introduce the Fracking Ban Act with @RepDarrenSoto today. pic.twitter.com/Mt7EEUxPPo

The congresswoman continued to defend her Green New Deal and slam the attacks on it in tweets posted Wednesday night.
The Green New Deal is and has been lied about nonstop, and yet is STILL popular.
It’s a massive job-creation and infrastructure plan to decarbonize & increase quality of work and life.
It’s okay to call the GOP out on those lies just as we call them out on all their other lies.

She lamented “how bad the climate change section of the debate was last night” in another tweet slamming the debate questions on the topic as “childish.”
I still can’t get over how bad the climate change section of the debate was last night.
This is the consequence of no climate questions in debates for years.
The questions were childish, no follow-up questions for basic information, & there was almost no talk of solutions.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 8, 2020
Ocasio-Cortez also lectured journalists on how to address climate change questions.
Journalists:“How do you feel about the Green New Deal” is not a climate change question.
Try: “What is your plan to bring down emissions?” so voters actually understand if a candidate even *has* a plan for the worst impending crisis of our time, and can share what it is.
