U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not remain silent for long as the issue of fracking was brought up during the vice presidential debate.

The New York Democrat appeared to criticize Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a tweet Wednesday after Harris repeatedly insisted that Joe Biden is not looking to ban hydraulic fracturing. Vice President Mike Pence had confronted his opponent during the debate about her record and that of the Democratic presidential nominee in their previous flip-flopping comments about the practice.

Harris was fact-checked in real-time Wednesday as she insisted the Biden administration will create new jobs based on “clean energy and renewable energy,” and will absolutely not ban fracking. The claim was met with immediate rebuttals, including video proof tweeted by President Trump showing Harris vowing to end the practice.

“I will repeat, and the American people know, that Joe Biden will not ban fracking. That is a fact,” Harris argued on Wednesday, despite the fact that both she and Biden have said otherwise.

As the candidates debated environmental issues on Wednesday, Harris repeatedly defended Biden’s position on the fracking issue which Ocasio-Cortez referred to as “bad” in a tweet.

“Fracking is bad, actually,” the progressive New York congresswoman tweeted.

The far-left wing of the Democratic Party has called on Biden to back the Green New Deal proposed by Ocasio-Cortez, who serves on the campaign’s climate task force. Biden has not done so directly but has spoken out about his view on fracking several times in his campaign.

“I am not banning fracking. Let me say that again: I am not banning fracking no matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me,” the former vice president said at a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania in August.

During Wednesday’s vice presidential debate in Utah, Pence pushed back on Harris’ narrative.

“Look, Sen. Harris, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own facts. You yourself said on multiple occasions when you were running for president that you would ban fracking,” he said.

Ocasio-Cortez introduced a national fracking ban in the House earlier this year which sought to ban fracking in the U.S. by 2025.

The congresswoman continued to defend her Green New Deal and slam the attacks on it in tweets posted Wednesday night.

She lamented “how bad the climate change section of the debate was last night” in another tweet slamming the debate questions on the topic as “childish.”

Ocasio-Cortez also lectured journalists on how to address climate change questions.
