Jill Biden, wife of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, waved off a question about her husband’s frequent gaffes from CNN’s Jake Tapper during a segment Monday, informing him he “can’t go there.”
“Your husband has been known to make the occasional gaffe,” Tapper began, before being cut off.
“Oh, you cannot even go there,” Jill Biden responded, as Tapper chuckled. “After Donald Trump you cannot even say the word ‘gaffe.’”

“Well, that’s what I wanted…I can’t even say the word ‘gaffe’?” Tapper responded.
“Nope. Done. It’s gone,” Jill Biden interjected.
“The gaffe issue is over,” Tapper pressed.
“Over. So over,” Jill Biden declared.
The interview, and Jill Biden’s pushback, comes a day before her husband’s first scheduled debate with President Donald Trump.
It also comes on the heels of new gaffes uncovered or made by the former vice president during media interviews and other appearances in recent days.
For instance, video surfaced this week of Joe Biden claiming during an October 2019 town hall-style event in South Carolina that he “got started out of an HBCU, Delaware State,” adding, “now, I don’t want to hear anything negative about Delaware State. They’re my folks.”
The institution, which is a historically black college, pushed back last week. “Vice President Biden did not attend DSU,” said Carlos Holmes, director of the university’s news service, adding that Biden was the keynote commencement speaker in 2003 and again in 2016, and that he “was awarded an honorary doctoral degree.”
And on Sunday, Biden struggled with an answer during an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle so much she eventually jumped in to help him remember.
Other recent examples include:
— In March, a tweet from Biden, 77, mistakenly identified “Super Tuesday” — a date when many states hold their primaries — as “Super Thursday.” A progressive journalist who simply quoted what Biden wrote was temporarily suspended by Twitter for posting “false information about voting or registering to vote.”
— Also in March following Biden’s good showing on Super Tuesday, the former VP introduced Jill Biden as his younger sister, and vice versa.
“There are two kinds of Biden gaffes,” senior Fox News political analyst Brit Hume observed following the incident. “There are the kinds he’s always made, and maybe this one tonight was one of those. He’s prone to that and always has been, no big deal. But more recently we have seen cases in which he didn’t know where he was.
“Those are more disturbing because they suggest he may be non compos mentis, or at least, headed in that direction,” Hume said, using a phrase that means “not sane or in one’s right mind.”
— Earlier in the month, Biden had difficulty remembering a common phrase from the Declaration of Independence.
— He also said if he wins the presidency, his party “can win back the House” — though Democrats currently are the majority in the House.
— During a virtual event in May, Biden could not remember the name of the person who provided him briefs about the then-still emerging COVID-19 pandemic, though such briefs would last “between an hour and an hour and a half” daily.
— Earlier this month, Biden lost his train of thought and struggled mightily when discussing COVID during a trip to Pennsylvania.
“COVID has taken this year — just since the outbreak — has taken 100 year. Look, here’s…the lives…it’s just…I mean, think about it. More lives this year than any other year for the past 100 years,” he said, though COVID-19 is a new virus.
— During a Democratic debate in June 2019, Biden told moderator Chuck Todd that the first thing he would do if he defeats President Trump would be to “defeat Donald Trump.”
“The first thing I would do is make sure that we defeat Donald Trump. Period,” he said.
By comparison, though President Trump at times rambles during interviews and explanations, he does not appear to have a mental acuity deficit. As such, it’s not clear why Jill Biden referred to the president when waving Tapper off the subject of gaffes.
