Former Secret Service agent and conservative podcaster Dan Bongino announced during his program Wednesday he is beginning treatment for a large neck tumor that is impinging on his vocal cords and one of his carotid arteries.

“I have a growth on my neck, it’s on my left side, it’s been there for a little bit of time now,” Bongino began, adding that he initially thought the lump was associated with swelling from a ‘choke-out’ incident he experienced during Ju-Jitsu training earlier this month.

But, he said, he received a number of messages from people via his Facebook account that they had noticed the lump, and while he initially ignored it, he admitted: “that was a mistake.”

Bongino said a friend who is a head and neck surgeon told him after he examined the lump not to hesitate in getting it “checked out” with an MRI.

The former NYPD officer went on to explain that he often has non-cancerous “fatty tumors” that develop and have to be surgically removed. “I thought that’s what it was,” he continued, in reference to the neck growth.

Bongino said after getting his MRI he noticed “the look had changed” on the face of the radiologist conducting the procedure “as he told me…it was not a lipoma…which was very scary,” he added as he got emotional.

“Now, that’s the bad news,” he said. “The good news is, it’s a tumor, but it’s a strong likelihood that it’s not, in fact, cancerous. But we don’t know what it is. It’s in a very weird spot in my neck. And it is big — it’s seven centimeters, head to caboose.”

“It’s scary,” Bongino continued before pausing momentarily, adding that he “debated” telling his listeners. He also said that the MRI exam revealed a degenerative neck condition in his C-5, C-6 spine region.

“It’s grown pretty quick so, you know, we’ll see what it is,” the host continued, saying he wanted to thank his wife especially, and his friends and the doctors.

Bongino also mentioned another growth “in another area that’s a little bit concerning,” but he did not elaborate.

“You know, I’m only 45, I’ve got young kids, and a dog…a great dog,” he continued. “This was not the news I needed.”

That said, Bongino noted “that life goes on no matter what happens, for me, for everyone else, this show will go on no matter what happens, no matter what happens, no matter what happens.”

He then referenced his t-shirt which bore the name of an organization — Folds of Honor — that provides educational scholarships for the spouses and children of fallen or disabled military members wounded or killed while serving the country.

“So, our struggles are minimum,” he said.

Bongino then referenced a conversation he had with his wife Wednesday evening.

“She said to me last night, ‘I knew something was going to go wrong, everything was too perfect,” said the host before getting emotional again, and then thanking his audience for helping him become more successful even as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the economy.

The podcaster and entrepreneur went on to say he canceled his regular appearance on Fox News host Sean Hannity’s program on Tuesday after learning about the growth “because it just wasn’t right.”

He praised the Fox News crew and went on to say that Hannity called him after hearing the news. The two spoke for a couple of hours when, Bongino said, the host normally would be preparing for his top-rated prime time program.

He said Hannity “got me on the phone with some friends of his who provided some significant assistance to me that I would not have gotten any other way and I’ll never forget that.”

Bongino also praised Hannity, who he described as generous and charitable behind the scenes and not at all the way his critics describe him.

The host said he will be traveling to New York City later in the week and “will have some updates” afterward, adding that he will continue to record his show in the meantime.

Scores of people wished Bongino well after hearing the news.
