A top Democratic congressman from Minnesota blasted his colleague, freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, claiming that he doesn’t believe she should even be a member of the party.
In a video obtained by the New York Post, Rep. Collin Peterson, also of Minnesota, ripped Omar, who has been plagued by scandal during her very first term, even after defending her highly controversial “Some people did something” statement regarding the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Peterson was asked by a staffer with the National Republican Congressional Committee on Capitol Hill Thursday, “Do you have any comment as to why you defend Ilhan Omar?”
“I don’t defend her. She doesn’t belong in our party,” Peterson, who has served 16-terms in Congress thus far, answered.
After being pressed, Peterson repeated, “She doesn’t belong in our party.”
In an April interview, Peterson appeared to defend Omar’s 9/11 comments, saying it was “inartful” the way she discussed it but nevertheless adding, “I don’t know that she meant what some people have taken out of that.”

Pressed further, Peterson added, “Well, I think she was trying to say that some people in her community feel like they’re being targeted.”
The Post noted it isn’t clear what has changed between the two lawmakers, both of whom are actually members of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, but it may have something to do with the upcoming November elections.
Omar won her primary very handily, representing a still-very-blue Minneapolis. But Peterson’s district is more rural and trending red, which could be why he is trying to put some distance between the two.
The Somali-born Omar, who has been accused of marrying her brother as part of an attempt to defraud U.S. government agencies and who has raised eyebrows over massive payments to her current husband’s lobbying firm, drew harsh criticism over her 9/11 comments.
“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” she said while speaking at a Council on American-Islamic Relations fundraiser in March 2019.
In reality, CAIR has been around since 1994 and, according to previously published reports, the organization is known for supporting terrorist groups that specifically target Israeli and American interests.
“First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something.’ Unbelievable,” said freshman Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), a former Navy SEAL officer and multiple combat tour vet who lost an eye following an explosion in Afghanistan.
Reports earlier this year said the FBI and other federal agencies are looking into “what could be the worst-ever crime spree by an elected US official,” David Steinberg, a contributor to The Blaze, noted.
In particular, authorities including the Department of Education’s inspector general’s office are said to be acting on information contained in a complaint filed in 2019 by Minnesota state Rep. Steve Drazkowski (R). The agencies are reportedly investigating whether Omar engaged in several acts to defraud the federal government.
