The left’s latest “bombshell” against President Donald Trump has already begun to crumble faster than cookies in milk.
The “bombshell” this time is that during an interview last March, the president admitted to Bob Woodward that he was purposefully downplaying the severity of the coronavirus at the time to prevent further panic.
This “bombshell” revelation led to the hashtag #TrumpLiedPeopleDie trending and everybody on the left predictably acting as if the president’s decision to promote collective calm versus panic during a time of great duress — when supply chains were failing and some Americans were already hoarding goods — was to blame for the coronavirus eventually overtaking the country.
FYI, the coronavirus eventually overtook virtually every country on Earth.
During an interview with the president late Wednesday on Fox News’ “Hannity,” both Trump and FNC host Sean Hannity pushed back on the left’s rhetoric.
Hannity started the pushback by pointing to Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s loud opposition to the travel ban the president had instituted in January.
“Ten days after the first identified case, you put the travel ban in effect, and then it was a subsequent ban — the first quarantine in over 50 years. [Biden] said it was hysterical, xenophobia and fear-mongering on your part,” the host said.
Yet National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci later testified that the travel ban that Biden and other Democrats opposed had in fact been responsible for saving lives amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Hannity’s point was that though the president had promoted calm, his administration hadn’t been just sitting idly by. Behind the scenes, away from the public spotlight, the administration had been enacting numerous policies meant to slow the virus.
Agreeing with the host’s point, the president noted that all he’d said was “don’t panic. We don’t want to be jumping up and down and going wild. Don’t panic. I’m a cheerleader for this country, and I don’t want to see panic.”
And he wasn’t alone. In January, February and March, every sector of the left — from top Democrat politicians to Democrat media outlets — sang the same tune.

Sure would be a dirty, rotten shame…

.#Democrats did the same thing in February. Several Democrat leaders, including @SpeakerPelosi, downplayed the danger of #COVID19. How many Americans did they kill? Will you condemn her , @NYCMayor Bill De Blasio, and others? pic.twitter.com/gG9mB6x2JV

Yet thanks to the Woodward “bombshell,” every Democrat seen above is now singing a different tune — an anti-Trump one seemingly designed to hurt the president’s approval rating as the pivotal 2020 general election looms closer.
And again, every single one of these Democrats, including Biden, initially expressed loud opposition to the president’s successful travel ban.
“I did something very important at the end of January. I banned China because the people from China were heavily infected, and I had a lot of people … believe that that we shouldn’t ban them, it was no reason to ban them,” the president pointed out to Hannity.
“And Biden was going around for many, many weeks after that saying it’s not even going to be a problem. We could have lost two million, maybe even more [people] than that if we did it a different way, and we’ve done a really good job, and if you look at our numbers, our fatality numbers compared to other countries.”
The United States’ case-fatality rate is among the lowest in the world, while it’s deaths per capita isn’t in the top ten:
Continuing the discussion, Hannity then noted that promoting calm amid the pandemic isn’t the same thing as downplaying the coronavirus.
“Actions mean something, and you taking it seriously was very clear then, and then when you said, ‘Well I don’t want people to panic,’ they say, well, you must have been downplaying it. Wouldn’t your actions contradict that narrative?” he asked the president.
“What I wanna show is a calmness. I’m the leader of the country. I can’t be jumping up and down and scaring people. I don’t wanna scare people. I want people not to panic, and that’s exactly what I did,” the president replied.
“And if you look at the representatives of Joe Biden, you see they said this won’t be a problem. He didn’t think it was going to be a problem until months later. He was way late. Pelosi was way, way late, and I was at the end of January far ahead of everybody because I did something nobody wanted me to do.”
At the time that the president took action, Democrats were still busy pursuing their impeachment against the president.

And then when the president tried speaking briefly about the coronavirus during his State of the Union address in early February, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi automatically dismissed everything he’d said.

Similarly, Democrats and their media allies are now dismissing all the evidence — of which there is plenty — highlighting their hypocrisy.
