Immigration and Customs Enforcement has charged 19 illegal aliens with engaging in acts of voter fraud in North Carolina, which is shaping up to be a battleground state again in the 2020 presidential election.

“These charges are the latest indictments to result from an ongoing years-long federal criminal investigation being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Raleigh office,” ICE said in a statement.

Seven foreign nationals were charged by a federal grand jury in Wilmington August 31 of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship or otherwise making false statements on voter registration applications.

They were also charged with misdemeanors for illegally casting ballots in the 2016 presidential election, ICE said, adding that non-citizens “are not eligible to register to vote in federal elections under U.S. law.”

If they are convicted, they could receive up to six years in federal prison and be forced to pay fines of up to $350,000.

In addition, 12 other people were charged Aug. 13 for illegally casting ballots in the 2016 election. If convicted, they face up to a year in prison and a fine of $100,000.

Shortly after his unexpected victory in 2016, then-President-elect Donald Trump said that he very likely won the popular vote as well as the electoral college tally because millions of illegal aliens unlawfully cast ballots.

“In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” he tweeted.

He was widely mocked by Democrats and their allies in the corporate media at the time, but clearly there are instances where illegal immigrants are casting ballots they were not allowed to cast.

In fact, local and state laws passed over the last decade or so have made it much easier for illegal aliens to cast ballots. In addition to so-called “sanctuary” laws that prohibit police from working with federal immigration agents to remove people in the country illegally, some states have allowed people in the U.S. unlawfully to obtain driver’s licenses which are then used as ‘voter IDs.’

One of those states is New York. In July 2019, one county clerk complained that the just-passed law would make illegal voting much easier.

“Well, not just the fear, it’s the idea that someone is here illegally and we’re gonna give them a license to drive that’s gonna look exactly like the license you have today,” Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola told Fox News.

He added that he believes the licenses for illegal aliens were designed to resemble licenses for citizens and legal residents so it would be easier for the illegal alien to vote.

“I said in 2007, I say it again, it’s really not about driving,” Merola said. “If they wanted to give them a license that looked a little different than your license and my license they could do that. They want to give them a license identical to the license that everyone holds to register to vote. And that’s exactly what they’re looking to do.”

His concerns were echoed by Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns, who said giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses and allowing U.S. companies to hire them was a violation of U.S. law.

“I took an oath of office to support and defend the Constitution. I’m not going to violate federal law,” he told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson a year ago.

He added: “I believe this is not about the driver’s license. This could be about voter fraud. I’m not going to be part of that.”
