CNN’s Jake Tapper reacted with disdain and disgust as thousands gathered at the White House ahead of President Donald Trump’s acceptance speech because they weren’t socially distancing or wearing masks.
The segment was introduced by another network host, Wolf Blitzer, who right away noted that “as many as 2,000 people” were assembling to hear the president cap off the four-day Republican National Convention “without much of any social distancing that we can see, or any mask requirements.”
Tapper began by claiming that health officials in the U.S. “breathed a sigh of relief” when Trump donned a mask earlier this month, noting that the officials were thinking, “finally we were going to get a good example set by the president.”
He then said he’d been talking to “health officials around the country who are just abjectly mortified by what they’re seeing from the South Lawn, which looks like a potential super-spreader event.” Tapper quoted a Harvard global health expert Dr. Ashish Jha, who allegedly expressed shock as well.
“We should expect better from our national leaders,” Tapper said, feigning outrage. “The idea that 2,000 individuals with no mass testing, no social distancing, very few of them wearing masks, coming together. Forget the Hatch Act violations, we’re getting into a matter of life and death here.”
“It’s really alarming. And I have to say that idea of this is happening while this pandemic is going on, and the president and the White House trying to convince us that it isn’t, is just otherworldly,” he continued.
He then cited what he no doubt believes is a horrific statistic.
“Since the Republican convention began on Monday, until 5:00 p.m. today Eastern, 3,688 Americans have died of coronavirus. Just since the Republican convention began, we have had more losses due to this virus than were lost due to 9/11,” he said.
During the Democratic National Convention, however, which was held the previous week (Aug. 17-20), there were 4,096 coronavirus deaths, according to an analysis of data.
Meanwhile, just a few blocks away, scores of protesters — many of them unmasked — gathered tightly in front of St. John’s Church, in which they threatened to light it on fire again if they don’t get ‘justice.’
Blitzer, Tapper, and the panel did not mention that crowd or the tens of thousands of Americans who continue to protest in tight-knit groups around the country, but others noted the hypocrisy.
Just a heads up to all the journos whining about social distancing at Trump's speech that this is currently going on in Lafayette Park https://t.co/lgrnE209OB

“Just a heads up to all the journos whining about social distancing at Trump’s speech that this is currently going on in Lafayette Park,” The Daily Caller’s Greg Price tweeted.
He also goaded Tapper.
I’m sure Jake here will have lots of thoughts on thishttps://t.co/KuBZC9Zpth

And others joined in to mock Tapper and CNN as well.
Jake just needs to imagine everyone there with a skateboard in their hands, looting and pillaging. I’m sure then he’ll make excuses for them in his own mind and his outrage will be quelled

The CNN panel also did not mention the non-social distancing that occurred when a mob surrounded Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who had to be escorted by police and was nearly knocked to the ground after thugs almost shoved an officer into him.
As for the president, he has never claimed the pandemic isn’t real. He did initially downplay it, but so did CNN and the rest of the mainstream media after Trump began taking it seriously in January, closing off the country to China, where COVID-19 originated. Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, initially downplayed it, too.
