MSNBC host Rachel Maddow was fact-checked after she attempted to claim that a new coronavirus treatment recently green-lighted by the Trump administration and announced by the president on Sunday was not approved by the FDA or top immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

On Monday as the Republican National Convention got underway, Maddow broke in during one segment to ‘fact-check’ President Donald Trump’s statement that “your blood is valuable, that plasma thing.”

“Again, the president not talking in a way that is copasetic with the science,” she continued.

“The White House did pressure the [Food and Drug Administration] to approve convalescent plasma under emergency use. It’s against the recommendation of FDA scientists and the NIH and Dr. Fauci that they did that,” she said.

“There isn’t any strong scientific evidence that suggests that convalescent plasma in antibodies is actually a sound therapeutic that’s going to be of value for treating people with coronavirus,” Maddow claimed.

But again, Maddow was proven wrong.

Zach Parkinson, deputy director of communications and research for the 2020 Trump campaign, tweeted a video of Fauci making an appeal about three weeks ago for Americans who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma to “help save lives.”

“If you’ve recovered from COVID-19, your plasma has antibodies that may help others fight COVID,” he says. “Please donate plasma now. You can literally save lives.”

He added “there are thousands of locations” around the country where plasma donations can be made.

“If you’ve recovered from #COVID19, confirmed by a positive test, consider donating your #BloodPlasma — this can help those who have recently contracted the virus,” Health and Human Services noted in a tweet accompanying Fauci’s video Aug. 14.

Parkinson then went in for the kill.

Other users also joined in.

During his Sunday press conference, President Trump said that the treatment “will save countless lives.”

“The FDA has issued an emergency use authorization … for a treatment known as convalescent plasma. This is a powerful therapy that transfuses very, very strong antibodies from the blood of recovered patients to help treat patients battling a current infection. It’s had an incredible rate of success,” the president said.

“To deliver treatments and vaccine to save lives, we’re removing unnecessary barriers and delays not by cutting corners, but by marshaling the full power of the federal government,” the president added.

“We’ve provided $48 million to fund the Mayo Clinic study that tested the efficacy of convalescent plasma for patients with the virus. Through this study, over 100,000 Americans have already enrolled to receive this treatment, and it has proven to reduce mortality by 35 percent. It’s a tremendous number,” he said.

Trump added that renowned research centers at the FDA, MIT, Harvard, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City “have also found convalescent plasma to be a very effective method of fighting” COVID-19.

The president also noted that the FDS made the “independent determination” to approve the treatment “based on the science and the data.”

As for Maddow’s incorrect claims, the media has been panned repeatedly for putting out false, misleading information regarding the pandemic.
