Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got a firsthand taste Tuesday of what conservatives routinely experience when the media purposefully take their actions or words out of context so as to portray them in a negative light and “generate hate-clicks.”
During the second night of the Democrat National Convention, the congresswoman delivered a 90-second speech during which she ostensibly nominated Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was the second-place winner in the Democrat primary elections, to be president of the United States.
When viewed by itself, her actions seemed belligerent and rebellious, because it was already very clear that presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden had been chosen to wield the Democrat Party’s torch going into the 2020 race.
However, this angle was patently wrong, though this fact didn’t stop NBC News from adopting it anyway.
Look:
The tweet was highly disingenuous, as it sought to portray the congresswoman’s ostensible endorsement of Sanders as a rejection of Biden.
But the reality is that AOC’s nomination of Sanders was a symbolic, procedural gesture that happens virtually every four years, except for when the Democrat nominee is running as an incumbent president.
It happened during the 2016 race:
It reportedly happened during the 2008 race:
This is an incredibly misleading tweet. @AOC filled a role others have in the past to honor the second place winner by symbolically nominating them. Hillary Clinton got the same respect in 2008.
It’s procedural! @NBCNews should delete and clarify https://t.co/paZ74nrvK1

And it happened Tuesday evening:
.@AOC nominates Senator Bernie Sanders for president of the United States ‘out of the love for all people’ https://t.co/8mtXh0wSov pic.twitter.com/GYNpaqy4RQ
— Reuters (@Reuters) August 19, 2020
Hours after NBC posted its original tweet, and long after the second night of the convention had concluded, the network finally issued a correction.
Look:
Editor’s note and clarification (1/2):
This tweet should have included more detail on the nominating process.
We have deleted the tweet to prevent its further spread, but it can be seen here for the record. pic.twitter.com/txXo4CCMOt
— NBC News (@NBCNews) August 19, 2020
Editor’s note and clarification (2/2):
Ocasio-Cortez was asked by the DNC to second Sanders’ nomination. The nomination is a procedural requirement of the convention.
Ocasio-Cortez has previously endorsed Biden, & her speech was similar in length to other nominating speeches.
— NBC News (@NBCNews) August 19, 2020
By then it was already too late, and confusion, anger, and vitriol over the congresswoman’s ostensible rejection of Biden had reached all four corners of Twitter thanks to NBC News’ typical distortion of the facts.
Look (*Language warning):
Wait did AOC really just nominate Bernie Sanders? I can’t tell what’s real and what’s parody anymore
— Jake Coco 💙🎶🇺🇸🐻 (@jakecoco) August 19, 2020
Why the actual fuck did AOC just nominate Bernie Sanders?
— 💛🐝Ebony (Wear A Mask) Edwards-Ellis💛🐝 (@Eedwardsellis) August 19, 2020
Why did AOC nominate Bernie? I’m confused.
— JimJordansSinglet (@JimSinglet) August 19, 2020
She’s too stupid to figure out why what she did was horrible for the Democrat Party.
— Rick Miller (@RicksFreeSpeech) August 19, 2020
Bad move AOC 🤦🏽♂️
— Mpaige (@Mpaige2) August 19, 2020
@AOC you’re dumb marxist haggis. You backing Bernie is the same as backing Trump! You’re a traitor.
Please start a new party as the marxist movement you back is not a democrat movement!
— jam (@Jamison_self) August 19, 2020
In tweets posted not long after NBC News issued its correction, the congresswoman slammed the network over the “enormous amount of hatred & vitriol” (that conservatives are quite familiar with) that its false reporting had engendered.
Look:
You waited several hours to correct your obvious and blatantly misleading tweet.
It sparked an enormous amount of hatred and vitriol, & now the misinfo you created is circulating on other networks.
All to generate hate-clicks from a pre-recorded, routine procedural motion. https://t.co/crDlEymgMD
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 19, 2020
This is completely unacceptable, disappointing, and appalling.
The DNC shared the procedural purpose of my remarks to media WELL in advance. @NBC knew what was going to happen & that it was routine.
How does a headline that malicious & misleading happen w/ that prior knowledge?
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 19, 2020
So @NBCNews how are you going to fix the incredible amount of damage and misinformation that you are now responsible for?
Because a 1:15am tweet to slip under the radar after blowing up a totally false and divisive narrative across networks isn’t it. https://t.co/zf6Wqiotvv
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 19, 2020
While she seemed to have a point, it’s unfortunate that she’ll likely never acknowledge that conservatives face the same lies and smears 24/7/365 — especially since she herself has been responsible for so many of those same lies and smears.
It’s perhaps because of this duplicity that conservatives weren’t too sympathetic to her plight:
.@AOC is subjected to what Trump and all conservatives deal with every day with the media. She revels in it when directed at others but doesn’t seem to like it too much when directed at her. Too bad little girl, welcome to the real world. https://t.co/twc7Ar6y2t

Meanwhile misleading headlines about Trump praising nazis (he didn’t) or about independent content creators being hateful because of SPLC hit pieces are A-OK, right A-OC?
— Styxhexenhammer666 (@Styx666Official) August 19, 2020
Welcome to what Conservatives deal with multiple times a day. It’s not fun is it.
— Kelli Ann (@JustTheKK) August 19, 2020
@AOC Wake up AOC! That was just a baby bite from the venomous media. Now think a bit of what the conservatives go through each min, each day!
— Kaysee (@Kaysee86666928) August 19, 2020
If asked, AOC might accuse these conservatives of engaging in “bothsideism,” because to many members of the left, it’s awfully difficult to acknowledge that politics isn’t a zero-sum game featuring good guys vs bad guys but rather a nuanced human endeavor featuring humans vs humans.
