U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert has not only recovered from COVID-19, he is crediting hydroxychloroquine for helping him combat the virus and now feels “really great.”
The Texas Republican, who tested positive for the coronavirus last month, told the Washington Examiner he is now feeling better and hopes to donate plasma in an effort to help others who get infected. He tipped his hat to the vitamins and the drug touted by some medical professionals and President Trump for helping him get back to health.
“I’m feeling really well, really great, actually,” Gohmert told the newspaper, saying that he has tested negative for the virus and positive for the COVID-19 antibodies this week.
“I had a couple of bad days, but I started taking hydroxychloroquine, [Zithromax], and zinc, along with vitamins D3 and C,” the 66-year-old said. “And I took a steroid nebulizer for a few days to help coat the alveoli in the lungs and protect them somewhat from the COVID virus attack.”
The Texas lawmaker was tested at the White House on July 29, just before a planned trip with President Trump. After testing positive, he self-quarantined back home in Texas where he reportedly experienced a few days of mild symptoms.
“I feel sorry for patients whose doctors are not even allowed to consider the hydroxychloroquine regimen. That’s a real shame,” Gohmert said.
Cleared to return to work by the Capitol’s attending physician, Gohmert said he planned to wear a mask if he is able to take part in votes or other business in Congress in the coming weeks.
“Anywhere that’s the rule, I’ll wear a mask,” he said.
Though the Republican has some doubts about the effectiveness of wearing a mask, he noted that he did wear one during in-person meetings before he was diagnosed. Many Democrats slammed Gohmert for supposedly going mask-less in the Capitol.
Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revoked the emergency use authorization of hydroxychloroquine, Gohmert elaborated on his treatment using the medicine.
“I know there were people, from some of the comments I got, they were hoping I would just die, but there were a lot of people praying,” Gohmert told “The Chris Salcedo Show.”
“But, I’ve got to say,” he added, “I got the hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, the z-pak, and zinc, and vitamins, steroid nebulizer, and I’m telling you, it made a huge difference, a huge difference.”
“So, I’m doing so much better than I would have expected,” Gohmert added.
“I’m grateful that people like the president, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and so many others have talked about it: hydroxychloroquine, it may not be the silver bullet to slay COVID, the China virus, the Wuhan virus, but it is a help to so many people,” Gohmert told Salcedo.
“Why would the non-doctors, Google, Twitter, Facebook, try to stop people from getting something that really does help people?” he asked. “It certainly helped me.”
The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr. found his Twitter account suspended last month when he shared a video of a doctor talking about the drug as a “cure” for the virus. Twitter claimed the tweet was in violation of its policy on “spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19.”

The president himself has been slammed repeatedly by his critics for suggesting that the anti-malarial drug is a promising treatment against the contagious virus.
“Many doctors think it is extremely successful, the hydroxychloroquine coupled with the zinc and perhaps the azithromycin,” he told reporters at a press briefing last month. “Many doctors think it’s extremely good, and some people don’t.”
