A large part of New York City was plunged into darkness early Friday as a massive power outage swept areas of Upper Manhattan.

The power company Con Edison reported that it was investigating the loss of electric supply at about 5 a.m. which caused the widespread outage that created a nightmare for morning commuters. The brief blackout occurred just days after more than a million people were left without power following a tropical storm that affected the area, with many still awaiting restoration.

About 180,000 businesses and homes in the Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Harlem were affected as videos posted on social media showed the extent of the darkness.

Con Edison reported that it was investigating “a problem on our transmission system” that was responsible.

A separate outage in Queens was reported about an hour later as more than 5,000 customers there were without power.

Several subway lines and other transportation was delayed by the power loss.

Videos were posted on Twitter showing when power returned to many areas just before 6 a.m.

For pandemic-weary New Yorkers, the power outage was just another bizarre event to add to months of challenges.

Other Twitter users noted that it was just another example of the incompetence of New York’s Democratic leadership.
