China’s state-controlled media is reportedly running a video advertisement that appears to use the coronavirus pandemic as a tool to criticize President Donald Trump.
A nearly six-minute video released by the China Global Television Network asks if the coronavirus “can beat populism,” portraying Trump and others as populist leaders who play the victim card and “successfully shirk responsibilities,” accusing the president of ignoring scientific data.
“Populist leaders like U.S. President Donald Trump are good at whipping up populist sentiment. They look strong. They promise they can ‘get things done.’ They are ‘experts’ at manipulating people’s feelings. But here’s the twist: They are incompetent at solving real threats and problems,” the video, titled “Can COVID-19 beat populism?” stated.
“When early testing was shown to be a common-sense response to stop the spread of the virus, he mentioned slowing it down to make the numbers look better,” the video, narrated in English with Chinese subtitles, claimed, highlighting pre-selected clips to emphasize the talking points.
A university professor was quoted panning Trump’s remarks and actions in response to the pandemic, calling out the “anti-intellectualism” and “deep suspicion of truth.” The video also targeted other so-called populist leaders such as Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro and Britain’s Boris Johnson.
CGTN declared that the coronavirus was a “test” and that “most of the populist leaders have failed.”
As if in an obvious confirmation of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s assertion that China is leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic to its benefit, the video goes on to claim that the virus has given the Trump administration an opportunity to “push its nationalist and protectionist agenda.”
“They are actively deporting immigrants at the U.S. southern border, effectively ‘exporting’ the coronavirus to other countries,” the video alleged, concluding that “they have failed” as “more people are beginning to realize that their populist rhetoric is nothing but empty promises.”
“COVID-19 might be another straw on the camel’s back to expose their hollow politics,” the narrator said.
The China Global Television Network, launched in 2016 and headquartered in Beijing, bills itself as a “multi-language and multi-platform media organization” comprised of six international television channels owned and operated by China Central Television, which is an organization controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
The video’s blatant attack on Trump and the predicted politicization of the pandemic seemed more to drive home that China seems to be positioning itself squarely behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
“Did we learn nothing from China?” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy asked in an interview with Fox News.
“I don’t know what the Chinese have on this Democrat Party, but they have a China problem. They will not hold China accountable. They will not even bring up bills on this floor that the Senate has passed,” the California Republican added.

He noted how he worked with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats for a year before the pandemic to create a bipartisan committee focused on China. And while Democrats agreed initially, “right before we named it, they said no.”
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton agreed that Biden “has a China problem.”
“His son got a sweetheart deal from the Chinese communists. We still don’t have all the details, but you can bet the Chinese do and it will be held over Joe Biden through the campaign and beyond,” he told Fox Business anchor Lou Dobbs.

Biden consistently downplayed accusations of China being a threat to the U.S., claiming last year that “they’re not competition for us” even as questioned continue about his official trip to China in 2013 along with his son Hunter Biden.
In an online appearance this week, Biden actually declared that Trump should not hold China accountable for the pandemic, which originated in the city of Wuhan, because Americans can’t distinguish “between a South Korean and someone from Beijing.”

The patronizing view of voters aside, not sure what that has to do with the CCP, or anything. pic.twitter.com/hWUbIRK910
