Fox News correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera continued to decry a federal judge’s decision to deny bail for Ghislaine Maxwell who will be “tortured” while waiting in jail for trial.
Rivera reiterated in a tweet on Wednesday his previous outrage over the case of the British socialite who is accused of child sex trafficking in her relationship with late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Prosecutors argued against her request for bail, claiming she was a flight risk, and U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan seemed to agree on Tuesday, denying bail.

Rivera slammed the judge’s decision, tweeting that Maxwell was “improperly denied bail, despite #COVID19 peril in prison.”
“Now she’s stuck in solitary confinement to be tortured for next year, not having been convicted of any of these 25 year old allegations, nor even found liable in any civil suit,” he wrote. “But hungry mob is happy.”

His contention echoed arguments he made on “Bill Hemmer Reports” Tuesday, slamming the federal judge for “copping out to the mob.”
“I think this was a political decision,” Rivera said.
“I think that the question is not whether she committed these hideous offenses. The question is whether or not she would show up for trial. She bought a house in New Hampshire, for goodness’ sakes. She went to all this trouble to stay in the country,” he asserted.
“They could take her passports,” he added. “That’s standard operating procedure.”
He also slammed the “awful” Brooklyn detention center where she is being held as a “hotbed of COVID-19.”
“I think that if you take her passport, you put the ankle bracelet on her, she owns property now, she could have fled this country long ago if she was so inclined,” he added. “Now to keep her there in solitary confinement, essentially for over a year awaiting trial, they are doing this to put pressure on her, the federal prosecutors.”
He contended that prosecutors are “punishing her before conviction,” pointing that the 58-year-old “has never been held liable in a civil suit, never been convicted of a crime.”
“She is not Jeffrey Epstein,” Rivera declared.
The Fox News discussion, which also included criminal defense attorney Jonna Spilbor, focused as well on the judge’s contention that several factors, including Maxwell’s financial position, added to the ruling that the flight risk was “simply too great.”
“The combination of the seriousness of the crimes, the potential length of the sentence, the strength of the government’s case at this stage, the defendant’s foreign connections and the defendant’s substantial financial resources all create both the motive and the opportunity to flee,” Nathan said in the virtual court appearance on Tuesday.
Rivera disputed claims that Maxwell had been hiding from law enforcement, an argument he also made in a tweet pointing out Maxwell’s recent property purchase.
Hate #ghislanemaxwell all you want, allegations of her loathsome crimes depict events that happened a quarter century ago. She denies all & has not fled US & not going to leave now that she’s purchased estate in New Hampshire. Despise her, but under law she should get bail.

“She was hiding from the Daily Mail, she was hiding from The New York Post, she was hiding from the National Enquirer,” Rivera told Fox News host Bill Hemmer. “She was one of the most sought after — with the exception of Meghan Markle — the most sought after tabloid figure in the country. ”
“Remember, these charges relate to offenses that happened 25 years ago, from 1994 to 1997,” Rivera concluded. “I think these are charges that are wobbly on their face and for this judge to chicken out and not give this defendant bail I think is copping out to the mob.”
Twitter users immediately reacted to Rivera’s tweets condemning the denial of bail, with many wondering what the veteran journalist was “afraid” of.

Guilty much, Geraldo? Perhaps Ghislaine knows too much about you?! 🤔 pic.twitter.com/i4Dx5SZUVu

…….This isn’t a good look, Geraldo. Makes one wonder a bit.

Improperly? Geraldo this is a bad take. She has multiple passports and a lot of money. Sounds like a flight risk to me.

An extreme flight risk with great means to make that happen SHOULD NOT be authorized bail.

I copied this tweet for when he deletes it.
