While presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden appears to be doing well polling-wise going into the 2020 race, the situation could drastically change once the presidential debates begin in late September.
Why? Because President Donald Trump is ready to pummel him, as he demonstrated during a Rose Garden presser Tuesday, and because the public has a relatively low conference that he, Biden, has what it takes to fight back.
As the president was ripping the former VP’s record to shreds in the Rose Garden, a poll from Rasmussen Reports emerged showing that only 54 percent of likely U.S. voters “think Biden is capable of debating the president.”
Meanwhile, 38 percent of voters believe he suffers from dementia, while a much larger 61 percent believe “it is important for him to address the dementia issue publicly.” Those are damning numbers.
The numbers dropped as Trump was busy saying the following:

“[T]hese are actual key elements of the Biden Sanders unity platform. Abolish immigration detention … Stop all deportations … End prosecution of illegal border crossers … Support the deadly sanctuary cities,” he said in the clip above.
“Grant work permits for illegal aliens … Provide taxpayer subsidies and welfare for illegal aliens … Vastly expand low-skilled immigration to the United States … Incentivize illegal alien child smuggling. … These are the things that are in the plan. This is Biden. Biden has gone radical left.”
The clip above was part of an hour-long presser during which the president spoke about the situation in Hong Kong and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While speaking about the pandemic, he cleverly dovetailed to Biden’s record.
“[W]e hold China fully responsible for concealing the virus and unleashing it upon the world. Could have stopped it, they should have stopped. It would have been very easy to do at the source when it happened. In contrast, Joe Biden’s entire career has been a gift to the Chinese Communist Party and to the calamity of errors that they’ve made,” he said.
“Joe Biden supported China’s entry into the World Trade Organization. … Biden personally led the effort to give China permanent, most-favored-nation status, which is a tremendous advantage for a country to have. … As Vice President, Biden was a leading advocate of the Paris Climate Accord, which was unbelievably expensive to our country. Would have crushed American manufacturers while allowing China to pollute the atmosphere with impunity. Yet one more gift from Biden to the Chinese Communist Party.”

The president’s articulate, lively takedown of Biden differed sharply from the oftentimes incoherent, rambling, dull diatribes the former VP has had to offer.
Take this example from a speech he delivered last month:

“I’m ready on day one after more than three years in office. Why isn’t Donald Trump ready? Mr. President, wake up. Get to work. There’s so much more to be done,” he said excruciatingly slowly as seconds of the American people’s lives ticked away.
He then allowed a couple more lengthy seconds of the American people’s lives to tick away before quietly whispering, “Thank you.”
It took him about 15 seconds to say 13 words, giving him a talking speed of 52 words per minute. That’s 118 fewer wpm than the speaking rate employed by motivational speaker Simon Sinek during his 2009 TED Talk, “How great leaders inspire action,” *cough*, according to data collated by VirtualSpeech.

Instead of waking people up, Biden’s speech likely put them to sleep …
To be fair, the rest of the speech was a bit more likely.
“Donald Trump thinks if he puts his head in the sand, the American people will too, but it doesn’t work that way. Not when hundreds of people are still dying every day and millions are unemployed wondering how in God’s name are they going to keep the lights on and food on the table,” he said at one point.
“Not when workers are weighed down with worries about their safety or what happens if they get sick. There are the steps that we need to be taking now to steer us steadily and strongly in the right direction, see us through this time, to make a more resilient future. They’re all available.”
The problem is that, unlike what Trump said Tuesday, the former VP’s remarks were easily refuted by facts showing that it’s been Democrats like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who’ve put their heads in the sand by pretending that their policy decisions to funnel sick patients to nursing homes wasn’t a big deal.
Plus, Biden had no room to talk, or so the president claimed.
“But if we had listened to Joe Biden, hundreds of thousands of additional lives would have been lost. And if you look at the job he did on swine flu, I looked at a poll. They have polls on everything nowadays and they got very bad marks on the job they did on the swine flu,” he added Tuesday.
“H1N1, he calls it N1H1. H1N1 got very poor marks from Gallup on the job they did on swine flu. And they stopped very early on, testing. They totally stopped it. They just said stop. And frankly, if we didn’t test, you wouldn’t have all the headlines because we’re showing cases.”
While it’s not clear the polling claim is true, Politico has admitted that Biden’s battle against H1N1 “did not go smoothly.”
