President Donald Trump suggested during an interview with Telemundo this Friday that he intends to sign an executive order that will include “a road to citizenship” for illegal alien children who’ve benefited from his predecessor’s illegal DACA program.
The remarks were during a confusing discussion that ensued after interviewer José Díaz-Balart asked him why he was deporting DACA recipients.

“I’m going to do a big executive order. I have the power to do it as president, and I’m going to make DACA a part of it. But, we put it in, and we’ll probably going to then be taking it out. We’re working out the legal complexities right now,” he said.
“But I’m going to be signing a very major immigration bill as an executive order, which the Supreme Court now, because of the DACA decision, has given me the power to do that.”
Part of the confusion stemmed from him saying “we put it in, and we’ll probably going to be then taking it out.” What does that mean?
Regarding the Supreme Court, last month Chief Justice John Roberts ruled that the president’s decision to rescind DACA was a violation of the Administrative Procedure Act. However, he did affirm that the president has the authority to rescind the order. It’s just that Trump reportedly hadn’t properly followed procedures.
It’s not clear how the Supreme Court reaffirming his right to rescind DACA relates to him now offering to grant DACA recipients “a road to citizenship.”
“I think people are going to be very happy with it, but one of the aspects of the bill, which, frankly, nobody knows about until right now, because I told no another reporter, so you have breaking news. Congratulations. But one of the aspects of the bill is going to be DACA. We’re going to have a road to citizenship,” the president added.
The unexpected remarks provoked immediate backlash from conservatives, including Sen. Ted Cruz, who warned that the president’s move would be “a HUGE mistake.”

In response, the White House issued a public statement attempting to clarify the president’s remarks.
“As the President announced today, he is working on an executive order to establish a merit-based immigration system to further protect U.S. workers,” deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement.
“Furthermore, the President has long said he is willing to work with Congress on a negotiated legislative solution to DACA, one that could include citizenship, along with strong border security and permanent merit-based reforms. This does not include amnesty.”
But citizenship is amnesty, is it not?

According to sources who’ve spoken to White House officials behind the scenes, the truth allegedly is that the administration is “still working on rescinding DACA.”

It could be what the president may actually be intending to do is rescind DACA but then offer DACA recipients a first dibs chance at citizenship through a new merit-based immigration system.
This naturally has the left peeved, because they believe immigration is a right versus something to be earned. Plus, the left is still upset over his outreach efforts to the Hispanic community.
During Friday’s interview, the president also blasted Democrats for their longtime refusal to negotiate fairly.
“I had a deal with the Democrats and they broke the deal. The DACA could have been taken care of two years ago, but the Democrats broke the deal. All of a sudden they just broke it for no reason,” he said.
What’s known is that the president has repeatedly offered to extend and expand the DACA program in exchange for simple concessions like funding for a border wall. But Democrats have rebuffed him at every step on the basis that illegal alien children are owed citizenship, and thus the rights granted them by DACA are “non-negotiable.”
