What a shame that we’ve already shipped it, the publisher of Mary Trump’s salacious tell-all book is suggesting, after a judge ordered a temporary halt on its release.
The disgruntled Trump family member, daughter of the president’s late brother, Fred Trump Jr., had planned to release the book titled, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” in late July, just ahead of the Republican National Convention.
Trump’s younger brother, Robert Trump, turned to the courts to stop his niece from publishing the book, and New York judge granted a preliminary injunction Tuesday temporarily blocking the book from being published.
Robert Trump cited a non-disclosure agreement Mary Trump signed as part of her inheritance, claiming that it barred her from writing about private family affairs — her father died in 1981.
Despite Tuesday’s court ruling, the Washington Post reported that the publisher said it already shipped thousands of copies of the book, part of an initial 75,000 copy run.
The book’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, said it was unaware that the niece had signed a nondisclosure agreement that would hinder the publication of her book, according to the Daily Beast.
Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp reportedly wrote in an affidavit:
“We did not learn anything about Ms. Trump signing any agreement concerning her ability to speak about her litigation with her family until shortly after press broke concerning Ms. Trump’s Book about two weeks ago, well after the Book had been accepted, put into production, and printing had begun. And we never saw any purported agreement until this action was filed against Ms. Trump and Simon & Schuster.”
Mary Trump’s lawyer, Theodore Boutrous Jr., called the temporary halt a violation of the First Amendment.
He also claimed the content was of “great public concern” ahead of the election.
“This book, which addresses matters of great public concern and importance about a sitting president in an election year, should not be suppressed even for one day,” the attorney said, according to the Post.
Boutrous said he will file an immediate appeal over the ruling.
“The trial court’s temporary restraining order is only temporary but it still is a prior restraint on core political speech that flatly violates the First Amendment,” he said. “We will immediately appeal.”
The book will reportedly detail “harrowing and salacious” stories about President Trump.
Citing people with knowledge of the matter, the Daily Beast said the book is expected to include conversations with the president’s sister, retired federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry, which contain intimate and damning thoughts of the president.
Simon & Schuster says in the book’s description that Mary Trump “shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.”
“She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse,” the description proclaims. “She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred Jr., and Donald.”
Not hard to see why they want this book out before the November election.
