DA in Atlanta shooting vilifies cops to get to murder charge, called tasers ‘deadly weapons’ two weeks ago

The District Attorney in the deadly police shooting in Atlanta apparently only thinks tasers are deadly weapons when officers are the ones using them.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced charges against former Atlanta Police Officer Garret Rolfe on Wednesday, asserting at a press conference that Rayshard Brooks was “never a threat” even though he resisted arrest, stole a taser and allegedly tried to use it against the officers as he escaped. Only two weeks ago, Howard had referred to tasers as a “deadly weapon.”

Rolfe is facing 11 charges, including felony murder, and could be sentenced to either life in prison without parole or the death penalty. Officer Devin Brosnan, who accompanied Rolfe on the 911 call to the Wendy’s restaurant where an intoxicated Brooks had reportedly passed out in his car in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane, was charged with a count of aggravated assault and two counts of violating his oath of office.

During the press conference, Howard seemed to skim over pertinent details of the incident, focusing not so much on the struggle between Brooks and the officers before the 27-year-old grabbed the taser, but instead, on the exchange before things escalated.

“One of the things that we noted from our evaluation was that Mr. Brooks on the night of this incident was calm,” Howard claimed. “He was cordial and really displayed a cooperative nature. Secondly, even though Mr. Brooks was slightly impaired, his demeanor during this incident was almost jovial.”

The Democratic District Attorney added to his questionable take with the assertion “that at no time was Mr. Brooks ever a threat to anyone, including the officers in that Wendy’s parking lot.” Of course, video of the incident showed a different scenario as Brooks fought with the officers before grabbing the taser. He began to run away before turning and pointing the taser at the officer, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Interestingly, video also captured Howard speaking at a press conference just weeks ago as he noted that a taser is “considered a deadly weapon under Georgia law.” Howard was speaking about in the case of the fired Atlanta police officers who were accused of using excessive force against two college students during protests in the city late last month.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson addressed the double-talk during his show Wednesday, noting that Howard is bowing to political pressure as he is facing an election runoff race on August 11, challenged from fellow Democratic rival Fanni Willis.

“Paul Howard has every reason to change the subject and is to bow immediately for the mob’s demands which is what he was doing. During his press conference today, a man who went berserk on police officers and knocked them to the ground as ‘jovial,” Carlson said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.

“If it was a taser it could have very easily have been officer Rolfe’s gun,” Carlson added.

“Had that been the case, officer Rolfe would be dead right now and you never would have heard the story because no one in the media would have cared enough to tell you. Still, the prosecutor’s prosecutor would like you to know that Mr. Brooks was cordial and no threat at all,” the Fox News host said.

Howard himself is currently under investigation for allegedly using a nonprofit to funnel at thousands of dollars of Atlanta city funds to supplement his salary. The prosecutor was also named in two sexual harassment complaints filed by county employees.

“They are going to tell us this was a racially motivated killing. And maybe they can prove that it was,” Carlson said, but added that without evidence, Howard “should not say things like this at press conferences.”

“It makes people hate each other and tears the country apart which is the last thing we need right now. Atlanta’s police department’s 58% black, that’s a higher percentage of black people than the city of Atlanta itself,” Carlson added. “So explain how systemic racism is responsible for the shooting. And speak slowly so we can understand.”
