It appears neither Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, a Democrat, nor Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best intend to accept any responsibility for the crisis in the Emerald City and resign from their posts, despite growing demands for them to do as such.

“I have confidence in the chief, and we’ve been asked in other forums “are you going to resign, is the chief going to resign?'” Durkan said during a joint briefing Thursday.

“The answer is no and no. We thought about a Thelma and Louise moment, but that’s not happening either. We are here, we got work to do, and we’re going to get it done. These are not easy days, but neither of us signed up for easy jobs and we are ready to tackle the challenges, listen to community, and move forward together.”

In statements Thursday, both she and Best acted as if the insanity unfolding in the so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), a six-block neighborhood that’s been commandeered by left-wing extremists, isn’t even of their own doing.

The crisis began Monday when the Seattle Police Department abandoned its East Precinct building, thus allowing left-wing extremists to commandeer it and use it as a headquarters to expand into and take over the entire neighborhood.

Yet as of Friday, nobody yet knew who’d ordered the department to abandon the precinct, though all the evidence pointed to Durkan being the culprit.

In an address to her officers that was published Thursday, all Best was willing to say was that it wasn’t her who’d authorized the move.

“You should know, leaving the precinct was not my decision,” she said. “You fought for days to protect it. I asked you to stand on that line, day in and day out — to be pelted with projectiles, to be screamed at, threatened and in some cases hurt.”

“To have a change of course, nearly two weeks in, it seems like an insult to you and our community. Ultimately, the city had other plans for the building and relented to severe public pressure. I’m angry about how this all came about.”

During her joint briefing with Durkan later Thursday, she doubled down.

“We were asked to do an operational plan in case we needed to leave,” she said. “The decision was made. We’re still evaluating about how that change came about but it didn’t come from me.”

Then who did it come from? She refused to say.

“We’re looking into all of it, to see where it came from,” was all she’d say.

But why does the police department have to look into it? Shouldn’t the Seattle Police Department be aware of who had ordered it to abandon an entire precinct?

Questioned by local journalist David Kroman after the briefing, Durkan’s chief of staff was just as obfuscatory.

Meanwhile, as the two city officials continue to obfuscate the truth about the precinct’s abandonment, the situation within CHAZ continues to grow more out-of-control.

“Our 911 response times have tripled in the area. They’ve gone from just over five minutes to about 18 minutes. … Rapes, robberies and all sorts of violent acts have been occurring in the area that we’re not able to get to,” Best said in a statement to reporters Thursday.

Reports have also emerged that the extremists within CHAZ have reportedly been patrolling the zone like armed terrorists and allegedly extorting local businesses.

“There is no legal right for those arms to be used to intimidate community members,” Seattle Police Asst. Chief Deanna Nollette said during a briefing on Wednesday. “We have heard anecdotally reports of citizens and businesses being asked to pay a fee to operate within this area. This is the crime of extortion.”

According to local journalist Jason Rantz of Seattle station KTTH, the extremists have also been harassing and assaulting those with differing views.

“Right now it’s too violent for us to go in,” he revealed during an appearance late Thursday on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“It’s a little bit too scary for us to go in, because when you go in and you have a different opinion than what they’d like to be seen on video, they end up harassing you and they assault you. I have a friend who’s a news reporter who got assaulted just two nights ago.”

Listen:

The only good news is that the SPD has reportedly retaken the abandoned precinct.
