Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden insisted in a virtual town hall that he is daily brought up to date about the coronavirus crisis.

The only problem: He can’t remember the name of the person who briefs him for more than an hour each day.

The former vice president had the memory lapse during another virtual event filled with now-expected technical glitches and awkward problems on Thursday.

Biden struggled to recall the name of the staffer as he hosted a virtual roundtable on the coronavirus pandemic from his home’s basement.

“Um, and uh, and I’m not, and I, I have a, I have a, uh, like all of you but every day I get between an hour and an hour and a half brief with um, uh, the former head of, our former surgeon general, anyway, with docs across the country, um …” the 77-year-old said.

The event, which included Democratic guests Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, was also peppered with the audio and technical problems one has come to expect from the broadcasts Biden send out from his makeshift studio.

The event even began with an awkward moment as Biden missed his cue and was reminded to get started by a staffer who could be heard saying, “Go ahead, sir.”

The gaffes continued to flow as he wrongly claimed at one point that COVID-19 has resulted in the loss of 85,000 jobs in the US as well as the death of “millions” – presumably all Americans.

“We’re … in the middle of a pandemic that has cost us more than 85,000 jobs as of today. Lives of millions of people. Millions of people. Millions of jobs,” the Democrat said. “You know, and we’re in a position where, you know we just got new unemployment insurance, this morning, uh, numbers — 36.5 million claims since this crisis began.”

President Trump has frequently targeted Biden’s blunders and on Thursday he told the Washington Examiner that the former vice president “has absolutely no idea what’s happening.”

Asked about Biden leading the nation in an economic recovery in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Trump responded: “Biden can’t do it. He doesn’t know he’s alive.”

The Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito asked Trump about Biden’s recent pick of New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as part of his new Climate Change Task Force.

“First of all, if you asked him who he named, he wouldn’t even know it. Okay. Nobody — he doesn’t even know. He didn’t put them there. Somebody did and Joe has absolutely no idea what’s happening,” Trump said.

Biden’s roundtable Thursday was just the latest in a string of technical failures that have dogged his campaign. A recent example was his virtual campaign rally for Tampa, Florida, in which he didn’t even make an appearance until nearly ten minutes before it ended.

Delayed feeds, momentary screen blackouts, and pixelated guest speakers provided plenty of frustration – and entertainment – for viewers.

Thursday’s flubs and issues, just as Biden’s past virtual attempts, got plenty of attention on Twitter – but for all the wrong reasons.
