Fox News host Tucker Carlson once again critiqued top government immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci during his Wednesday evening program, noting that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director isn’t the only expert with thoughts on how best to open up the economy during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Noting that the long-serving National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director has been “wrong quite a bit” and that “sometimes he’s absurd” in his recommendations, Carlson derided Fauci as some “stone-cold genius who you are not allowed to question.”
Teasing the upcoming segment, Carlson noted:
Dr. Tony Fauci, a stone-cold genius who you not allowed to question told us that masks do not work, now he’s telling us they are completely essential, told us that handshaking should never be allowed but having sex with random people you meet online is totally cool. Fauci has been wrong quite a bit. Sometimes he’s absurd. Now he’s praising China for its transparency, and we have the tape of that. We are not attacking him, okay? We are just, as citizens, asking questions What’s going on?
Before introducing his guest, Dr. Marc Siegel, a Fox News medical contributor, Carlson played a Fox News clip featuring Fauci who actually praised China for its transparency during as COVID-19 began to spread around the world.
“China has been known to fiddle with their stats before. Do you trust what they are telling us about this illness?” David Asman asked.
“From what I can see right now, they are really being much, much more transparent than what happened with SARS, where they really kept back information for a while,” Fauci said. “It was really embarrassing to them. They’re really transparent now, they put the sequence of the virus up on the public database right away, so in that respect, they’ve been transparent.”
In bringing on Siegel, Carlson said he was surprised to hear Fauci make such a statement, especially given what we know about China’s historic opaqueness when it comes to the country’s internal affairs.
Siegel agreed, and while he prefaced his comments by noting he had “a lot of respect” for Fauci, he disagrees with him fundamentally over his recommendations of continued caution in reopening the economy and schools, as tens of millions of Americans suffer economically and otherwise.
“I want to start by saying I have a lot of respect for Dr. Fauci for many years, but there are three major areas I disagree with him on strongly,” Siegel said. “One is the Chinese scientist issue. The second is lockdowns, and the third is schools.”
Siegel noted that Chinese scientists work for the Communist government and thus, they were only able to report what Beijing’s leaders allowed them to report. The Chinese leadership, while locking down internally, nevertheless allowed citizens to travel to Europe and the U.S. knowing how virulent COVID-19 was and how easily it spread, especially to the most vulnerable.
The Fox News contributor continued:
Second point is regarding lockdowns. There was a scientist back in 1918, he was the health commissioner of St. Louis. Do you know he did? He looked at the Spanish flu, and he said it’s coming here from Boston. Second wave. You know what he did? He locked down the city and he saved thousands of lives. Way in advance of a much less contagious virus than this one. Way in advance, that’s the key.
Because remember, I just told you this thing, this COVID-19 has been spreading wildly throughout society. It’s too late for lockdowns. All of these … lockdowns are destroying our economy, leading to thousands and thousands of deaths from despair, from drug abuse, from alcoholism, from unemployment. We have to consider that. We should focus only on the hot spots and just do social distancing and start to take all of these cables off.
Thirdly, Siegel says it’s pointless to continue keeping schools closed because he also doesn’t believe that a “second wave” going to be much of a problem.
Siegel says he’s been monitoring the progression of the virus in Australia, “in the Southern Hemisphere, that’s essentially our November.” He added that Fauci has been monitoring that country as well.
“You know how many cases are in Australia today? Eleven. Only 11 new cases,” Siegel said, noting that by the time the next school year rolls around the country will have widespread testing in place and that the virus will have already swept through the population.
