Our founding fathers believed that press free from government regulation and oppression would be a useful tool for the people to hold their leaders accountable for corrupt actions and abuse of power.
But today, the folks who comprise most of our ‘mainstream’ media seem to believe that holding political leaders to account should only apply to one party and not the other.
Case in point: CNN ‘media accountability guy’ Brian Stelter. The guy literally had a mini-meltdown on his little-watched program this week complaining about “right-wing media” (no such thing as “Left-wing media” to him) becoming “obsessed” over revelations that the Obama administration literally framed President Trump’s first national security advisor, Michael Flynn.
No, we shouldn’t be talking about that, at all. We should remain focused on the coronavirus death toll, which of course, the mainstream media has been focusing on primarily now for weeks on end.
“It’s so disappointing to look at what we’re seeing from right-wing media these days, there’s such an obsession with the deep state and these revelations about the Russia probe and the decision about Michael Flynn,” Stelter complained.
“They’re treating the Michael Flynn story like it’s a bigger deal than it is the deaths of 2,000 Americans a day … When the president called in to ‘Fox and Friends’ … Friday morning, right before the unemployment rate numbers came out, he talked about the Flynn case for 20 minutes before he was asked about the pandemic,” he wailed, adding he did not believe “any political scandal, any Department of Justice story” was more important “than the pandemic that’s raging.”
“Look, ultimately it’s about news judgment, it’s about lack of judgment — but I find it befuddling that some people are acting like this death toll is just normal, and accepted, and common, just another day now. Imagine if 1,000 to 2,000 Americans were dying every day from terror attacks? Imagine the president’s response?” Stelter concluded.
Speaking of ‘news judgment’ and ‘obsession’ with the Russian collusion hoax, here’s a little montage of Stelter put together by the Washington Free Beacon:
Obsess much, Brian? And that ‘story’ turned out to be a complete lie. In fact, as we have reported, it turns out that former CIA Director John Brennan hid intelligence indicating that Mother Russia was actually favoring Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, not Donald Trump, because she was a “known quantity.”
But this notion from Stelter that the Flynn case should not have been reported is absurd. In fact, news organizations can do both — report the latest on coronavirus and report that the Obama administration set up Flynn to take a fall as a way of disrupting the incoming Trump administration.
Only, Stelter doesn’t think the latter story is even worth mentioning. To him, the coronavirus story is the end-all, be-all of the current and foreseeable news cycle, as though nothing else is important.
Whatever his motivations, Stelter would be seen as an aberration by our founding fathers, not as a member of any news organization they would likely sanction.
“In those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own. Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech; a thing terrible to public traitors,” founder Benjamin Franklin wrote — when he was 16.
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free … all is safe,” Thomas Jefferson once observed.
I don’t think they had someone like Brian Stelter in mind.
